Recommend me a digital camera?

    Hi,

Hopefully this thread is not too out of place, but I'm looking to treat myself to a camera in the new year. I travel a lot and not often to traditional destinations, and I travel to travel, not take photos hence what I'm looking for is a compact retractable lens one, as opposed to big 'ol SLR or 10x camera.

I don't mind spending the money on a good one, if the extra money buys better quality, looking to spend say 200-350 euro.

Unfortunately, I know nothing about decent digital cameras, having contented myself to the one on my Sony Ericsson 800i for the last year.

I've heard good things about the Sony touchscreen Cyber-Shot N2? Although I believe its more expensive than the price I mentioned above.

While I'm here, where's a good place to shop for cameras?

try to get some with image stabilization or vibration reduction (IS or VR)
canon SD850 (IXUS900) or nikon L15 are good examples and within your budget I think

    canon SD850

thoroughly recommend this one. looks sleek and takes great photos, as per usual from canon. it was about €300 so i'm sure it's gone down in the sales, so for the savings you get you could just buy a nice big sd card too

    if money isnt the issue

buy one of the leica all in one camers. expensive but as good as they come

Isn't the leica basically a rebadged panasonic?

My boss is a canon 5D user and got a G9 as his pocket (although slightly bigger than pocket sized) camera, and he loves it. i had a wee shot and thought it was really nice and solid, intuitive controls, and great quality shots from what I've seen as well. I know that was a few hundred quid more last time I looked, out of sheer curiosity ;)

In general, stick to a big name (canon, nikon, oly, panasonic type thing) and I doubt you can go too far wrong in that price range. I don't think anything is going to stand out hugely from the rest either. Best to assess in more detail what it is that you want to prioritise then see what fits the bill: size/weight? build quality/ability to get bashed about and survive? Low light capabilities/IS? wide or long zoom? You have to decide what you want before you can tell what's best...
