    Is it possible to get Java 6 as a zip download instead of the exe? and if so, where.

    Why?
    The .exe download is already compressed.

    I presume it's to get through a firewall is it?

    Most will be able to scan zip files, so a zipped version may cause the same problems.

    IIRC you need the exe to install the program

    These are what's on the site
    http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
    the offline one is the one you want if you to deploy to multiple pc's

    contact your administrator if you don't have rights to the whatever is blocking your download
