by their best striker. Robbed this from another forum and yes, I'm very bored!

    1. Didier Drogba (Chelsea)
    2. Fernando Torres (Liverpool)
    3. Rooney (utd)
    4. Van Persie (Arsenal)
    5. Robbie Keane (Spurs)
    6. Nicholas Anelka (Bolton)
    7. Michael Owen (Newcastle)
    8. Benjani (Pompey)
    9. Roque Santa Cruz (Blackburn)
    10. Yakubu (Everton)
    11. Dean Ashton (West Ham)
    12. Gabriel Agbonlahor (Villa)
    13. Rolando Bianchi (Man City)
    14. Kenwyne Jones (Sunderland)
    15. Tuncay Sanli (Boro)
    16. Emile Heskey (Wigan)
    17. Kevin Doyle (Reading)
    18. Cameron Jerome (Birmingham)
    19. David Healy (Fulham)
    20. Kenny Miller (Derby)

Some tough choices. I would rather have Berbatov in my team but Keane is scoring for fun so had to be in ahead of him. Difficult choice between Van Persie & Adebayour but I prefer the Dutchman. Similar hard choice between Martins and Owen. When Owen is fit hes lethal but its a rare thing...

    Top strikers (all comps)

    Fernando Torres - 14
    Keane - 12 (2 pens)
    Santa Cruz - 11
    Anelka - 10
    Adebayor - 10 (2 pens)
    Yakubu - 10
    Tevez - 9
    Drogba - 9
    Martins - 7 (1 pen)
    Van Persie - 7 (1 pen)
    Rooney - 7
    Berbatov - 7 (1 pen)
    Kuyt - 7 (2 pens)

    Top 10 - Strikers (league)

    Emmanuel Adebayor - 10
    Nicolas Anelka - 10
    Benjani - 9
    Aiyegbeni Yakubu - 9
    Torres - 8
    Robbie Keane - 8
    Marcus Bent - 7
    Roque Santa Cruz - 7
    Carlos Tévez - 7
    Gabriel Agbonlahor - 6

Just in terms of the Torres vs. Rooney debate,
if you look at records, Rooney's is better than Torres for the past 2 years, not just in goals, but in assists aswell
    League(All Comps)

    Torres:
    05/06: 13(14) goals - 3(3) assists - Games played: 36(39)
    06/07: 14(19) goals - 5(5) assists - Games played: 36(48)
    07/08: 8(14) goals - 2(2) assists - Games Played: 15(23)

    Rooney:
    05/06: 16(21) goals - 10(14) assists - Games played: 36(49)
    06/07: 14(23) goals - 11(14) assists - Games played: 36(55)
    07/08: 4(7) goals - 5(6) assists - Games Played: 11(17)

As for Van Persie, I'm still not sure Rooney is better than him. He is an amazing player.
Torres looks good, but imo still has yet to show he's in Rooneys and Van Persies class

Interesting. I rate Rooney highly, hes a great player but I just dont think hes clinical enough to be considered the second best in the league. Admittedly, I had seen little of Torres before he came to Liverpool so I have no idea if his good form will continue indefinitely. If it does however, I would rate him above Rooney.

    This season -

Torres has 14 goals and 2 assists from 17 starts(+ 5 sub apperances).

Rooney has 7 goals and 6 assists from 17 starts (no sub apperances).

[edit] just saw your reply PHB. In fairness, you are comparing Rooney who played in a free scoring utd team that won the league to Torres, who played in a very poor A.Madrid side. He played about 30% of last season on the wing and was often played as a lone striker. Not exactly a fair comparison but I take your point. Torres is still to some extent unproven. We will have to wait until the end of the season to make a fair analysis of him.

Athletico finished 7th with 46 goals scored and 39 conceded last season.
Utd finished 1st with 83 goals scored and 27 conceded last season.

Also (from your stats) Rooney has scored 5 more goals but has played 11 more games...
    Rooney - 121 games - 51 goals
    Torres - 110 games - 47 goals

I rate Van Persie highly but he has to stay injury free for a whole season before he will reach his full potential.

Tusky, I can't believe you have Doyler so far down your list tbh.

Compared to Rooney? Who has spent a large part of his United career on the left wing and as a lone striker except when Saha is fit :)

You make a fair point about last season, no doubt, United are a better goalscoring team, but that doesn't necessarily reduce him as a player. A lot of players do better when they are the big fish in a small pond, as everything runs through them, Bent is a good example, just like everything did for him at Madrid. I'm not saying Torres isn't great, I'd like to have him in the United side, I'd just rate him behind Rooney and Van Persie. Torres has yet to show that level of quality imo, and so far as done about as well as five other premiership strikers. Form is temporary, class is permanent as the old saying goes. I've yet to find out if he is truly that level of class.

Also I think the problem Rooney has had this season is injuries. He started off injuried, the once he got fit, he scored 7 goals in 7 games, then got injuried again. He is now beginning to regain his form, at which point he's gona start scoring freely again. I said it after watching him pre-season this year, I think Rooney is gona have an incredible year for United. Rooney I think will win United the league (while Ronaldo wins us the CL :P)

Scousers will try anything to have Liverpool ahead of Man Utd in a league format

I'd put Rooney ahead of Torres, but if Torres continues his form for the whole season then maybe

That could kill the thread, but yea, it goes from goals conceded from open play, to not losing a game, to not losing a league game, to least goals conceded, to most clean sheets, to most "jolly good sports" etc. :)

Yeah...I didnt really put as much thought into the bottom half of the list. If I was to be honest, Doyle is better than a few that are above him. I still dont rate him all that highly though.

Yeah, fair point. As I said, Im basing Torres form thus far v the Rooney that I have seen for the past few years. If Torres continues in this form than I would rate him as high or higher than Rooney although there is no guarantee that this will happen. Its also a bit of a silly argument as Rooney is much more of a link man than Torres, who is more of a CF. Rooney has been doing it for utd for a few seasons now, Torres has only played half a season...

Bit unfair to be honest. This thread certainly wasn't intended to put Liverpool above utd. I think Utd are a better team than Liverpool. I don't see everything through 'scouse-tinted' glasses.

are we rating them on this season, or the last few seasons?

if its the last few seasons, then Torres isnt eligable, but if its this year, Torres is miles ahead of Rooney.

Rooney has had a very stop-start season as well though, injuries have really interrupted his form. Before his ankle injury he was on fire.

didnt he pick up his ankle/foot injury in the first game of the season?!

He broke his foot in the first game, then when he came back went on an incredible scoring run, then injured his ankle in training and was out for another 3 weeks.

Torres would have to get the edge this season admittedly. And being really honest, I was one of those that questioned if he'd adapt in his first season.

Agree pretty much, except Berba for Keane and Benni McCarthy for Santa Cruz, although in both cases, there is very little to choose between them.

Er, scuse me but "Vile" is the derogatory term used by Birmingham City (Small Heath) fans to refer to "Aston Villa".

I don't think it's a good idea to get into that, unless we're allowed to call them all blue nose granny mugging scum?

    Ho ho no

Interesting to see that a lot of people don't rate Yakubu that highly. I think he has the 2nd most premiership goals since 2003.

He can be lazy at times but he is a proven premiership striker.

    1 Drogba
    2 Torres
3 Rooney (Ronaldo more so but technically he is a midfielder)
    4 Van the Man
    5 Keane
    6 Anelka
    7 Doyle

The rest are two close to call.

Torres is simply amazing he'd be pushing Drogba pretty closely imo, I find it hard to complement any Liverpool player but this kids quality
