i have been working in the IT sector for about 10 years.
about 3 years ago i moved in the support side mainly working as desktop support with some active directory exp also.It was basically all contract work working with many different companies
About 5 months ago i accepted a full time job as a sys admin working for a company.Userbase about 120 people.
Basically there is just the IT manager and myself.
Basically i do all the desktop support work and learn the server stuff as i go along.
I hope to do the 2003 mcse exams.
There is one problem. My boss is very exact and checks up on everything i do.
I seem to get on with most people in the company and they seem happy enough with me.
However the problem lies with my boss.
Normally he tells me where i am going wrong, which i dont mind as i have made mistakes in there as anybody would.
But he recently flew of the handle last thursday.
Told me that he feels that i am not up tos scratch after the 5 months and i should re-evaluate my position over the xmas.
i told him at the time of the interview that there is a lot of stuff i dont know (servers, swtiches etc) and will need to learn those.
    He knows this.
But when i go to ask him questions sometimes hebites the head of me.
    somedays he is the finest.
Another thing is,its just me and him in the room..its really quite and he doesnt say much and when he talks its all bout work.
so im not sure if he wants me to go or stay..its a really good opportunity for me at this company as they are updating alot of their servers, software etc and i could learnt a lot but i am not sure if i can work with this boss...
    ideas please?
i know jan is probably the best time for looking for a new job...

Does your boss have good reason to check up on you regarding your work, what types of mistakes have you made in the past? Anything major?

Maybe he just doesn’t like you - strange that he doesn’t even talk and you’re in the same office. If you are getting good experience I'd stick it out but 10 years in IT and you don’t know "(servers, swtiches etc)" you need to be more precise as this sounds like you haven’t a clue - Your boss might be thinking he made a mistake taking you on and can’t get rid of you.

Best of luck - I think you have a good opportunity to develop in this job so get as much practical experience as possible then think about moving on.

There are loads of IT jobs out there, so you have no need to stay in a job you don't like.

January is indeed a great month for vacancies, so look forward to a new job in the new year :)

That might be a little unfair joepc, I know what you mean but IT is such a huge field, it is difficult to be an expert on everything. To be honest the "IT manager" sounds like a clueless moron and a bully so he has the problem not you. I personally would be very cool towards him, not nice and friendly but direct.

Do try and learn as much as you can. In future if you have a technical question, try not going to the boss for the answer, use google or books to find the answer. The reason he bites your head off is because he doesn't know either:)

If you have passed your probation then I don't see why you need to evaluate your position within the company - don't let the guy muscle you out.
Did you replace somebody, do you know why that person left?

Anyway it will be fine, be professional.
