I am about to buy a 39Mp digital camera.

I will be using it on location and I will require a laptop that has the following:

    1. FireWire 800 (IEEE1394b) and USB.

    2. At least 2Gb RAM.

    3. 80Gb Hard Drive.

    4. DVD drive.

    5. Fast processor.

The laptop will only be used for image capture. It will not be used for processing the RAW files, so I will not have Photoshop or anything else on it.

But, speed is of the essence. So, I will require fast RAM and a fast processor.

The quality of the screen is immaterial. I just want to be able to see what I've captured. That's all. Colour accuracy will be determined/adjusted on my desktop at home.

I'd like to spend under €1k, if possible.

    Suggestions would be most welcome.

    Thanks.

    D.

For Photography a MacBook Pro is your choice. Really the display, if calibrated properly, is way better than any PC equivalent but as you say you require speed then any old Dell will do but I always reccommend Macs simply as the're optomised for the professional.

i'd say the opposite, dont touch a mac.

go for a bog standard dell, with maxed outram and your grand

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I don't use Macs. Gave them up a few years back. I have two PC desktops with serious calibrated monitors that I use for editing.

As I wrote, I will only need this new laptop for capture. Nothing else.

So, if it's to be a DELL, then which one? I think they have a few ranges.

    Thanks.

They should have more than enough speed for what you want, dont think 4gb ram is needed yet...

    Deco,

    Look perfect!

    Thanks.

Edited: Deco, I assume that it has a FireWire connection. Right? I just can't see it mentioned anywhere. Ta. D.

I don't think the vostros do have a firewire port. You should be able to get an express card that adds firewire ports to your laptop.

    AC,

    What's an express card?

What does it connect to on the computer?

    Thanks.

Basically it's the newer version of the pcmcia slot. There will be a little slot somewhere on the laptop where you just slide the card into. It should be on all new laptops. It's on my dell and that's over a year old.
