At a glance it looks like the mds process might be the problem. Is it always using so much cpu? If so it would indicate Spotlight is indexing the drive but it shouldn't be doing this all the time. If it is it means the Spotlight database is corrupt. So you'll have to rebuild it. The easiest way I know to this to go to

System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy

Click on the "+" and add your hard drive to the list. Then select it and click the "-", removing it from the list. Basically this should delete the Spotlight database and force it to start reindexing. This will take a while, during which time your mac will still be sluggish but it should be ok afterwards.

Have just compared your activity monitor to my own, and your mds is using a similar amount of memory as mine. Have you restarted your computer recently? I find that while it shouldn't be necessary, it can often help speed things up a little :)

Get rid of Google Desktop for a start. There's a thread elsewhere on this forum regarding it. Causes the problems you're describing.

    From Google themselves.

    And again . . .

Try getting rid of Google Desktop too.

To delete something from the system startup routine, try :

System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items and select the app you want to remove and click the "-" under the window.
