    Hi all,

I'm unfamiliar with what comes with the standard boxed Wii and wondering what extras are must haves and what are nice to haves? I'm talking about controllers, memory cards, etc.

    Cheers.

With the Wii all you get is the console itself, SCART cables, Wii Sports a Wiimote and a nunchuk.

If you have an HD television, the Composite cables are a good purchase.

If you intend to play with other people, getting another Wiimote and Nunchuk is a good idea. As well as rechargeable batteries/battery pack to keep them going.

You won't need a memory card as all saves are catered for within the console. However, having an SD card handy is a good idea for using the Photo channel, transferring saves from one Wii to another, backing up information or playing music within certain games (Excite Truck for example).

As for games, it's entirely up to you. You'll find more than enough opnions here.

Yeah, definitely get the component cable from play-asia.com (for HD telly) and the battery pack and recharger from dealextreme. Essentials

    Have a look at www.dealextreme.com

I've heard they're pretty reliable and some of the deals are good on accessories.

If you're getting a new Wiimote I'd suggest getting Wii Play which comes bundled with a second remote. The game itself is no great shakes and you'll be bored with it in about 10 minutes but it's around about the same price and if you have small kids or siblings who'll be playing it it's a grand distraction.

Definitely a second Wiimote and nunchuck (you get one of each in the pack anyway) if you want to have multiplayer games like tennis, boxing or baseball in Wii sports. Bowling and golf can be played using one remote shared between people because they're turn-based.

Boxing is the only one that requires the nunchuck in sports.

Not quite an extra BUT I can't recommend picking up Super Mario Galaxy enough. I'm not a big gamer by any means, usually only like the games you can pick up and leave at any time like sports but by god the new Mario's good...

I'd pick up a copy of Call Of Duty 3 as well, it's very good and provides a more traditional game style than the many minigame collections, that said Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 is excellent, as is the aforementioned SuperMarioGalaxy and Metroid Prime 3 Corruption.
Eledees is a lovely intro to gaming and so is Kororinpa, both built with the complete beginner in mind.

Seconding this. I can't reccomend Mario Galaxy enough if it's your type of game. Not many games can make you grin like a moron and keep you smiling while providing challenging platforming, imaginative boss battles and frustratingly difficult segments mid-level (Matter Splatter i'm looking at you).

If the previous Metroid Prime games tickled your fancy then 3 is really a natural progression as it is more of the same with a lot more besides. It may not be as good as the first in the series but it sure as Hell whups the second into... uh... third place.

Some of the other games mentioned are also worth a look but might not appeal to certain gaming demographics (Raving Rabbids and me for example) but with the back catalogue available and the games incoming over the next few months you won't regret your purchase. Smash Bros Brawl and No More Heroes alone set to make the Wii solid gold real estate in 2008.

    Seriously?

I wouldn't touch any of these accessories.

It's just a piece of plastic that you clip onto your wiimote to make it look like a steering wheel - it doesn't do anything.

The Zapper attachment is the only one worth it's salt so far.

The official Nintendo wheel attachment advertised by Reggie when they announced Mario Kart looks nice though, it might become the second attachment worth looking at.

Actually you don't get a scart cable with the wii, you get a ****ty component cable. A scart cable is a must if you don't have a HD TV (otherwise go for composite).

Wrong way around... you get a ****ty composite cable with the Wii, and should really buy a component cable if you have a HD TV.

I still haven't bought battery packs and a docking station for mine yet, might have to check out dealxtreme for those...

I thought the component cables looked a bit dodgy with some Wii games?

    @steviec
I got it for the kids - 4+5 - for the likes of Cars and Excite Truck, and the one I got from DX is solid heavy plastic and surprisingly very very good, especially considering the price, kinda leathery feel
At about €5.80 I would not play any driving game without it now.
Don't get it confused with those white hollow wheels, they look crappy and light

I'm on my Wii right now typing this(with a USB keyboard of course). Wiimotes eat batteries so I strongly advise a docking station. I know of three:
The Nintendo one which also acts as a glowing base for the Wii(2 wiimotes)
The Small singles which are made by 4gamers I beleive
    The Joytech One(2 wiimotes)

I have the Joytech one and it seems the best. Taps into wii power source so it leaves the 2 USBs open for other things(like a keyboard) and comes with 2 battery packs that(Ni-MH[the better one]) and also has pull-out holders for 2 nunchucks. Under €40 shipped off ebay.

Note: It appears that none of these will fit if you apply skins or covers to your motes:(

Planning to use the Wii mainly on a 22'' Philips TV. It only has a scart input. Do I need to buy a scart cable for the Wii?
I have a connector that we're using with that TV at the moment which has scart socket to fit into the TV and has 4 inputs for audio(L or mono), audio R, Video and S-Video. Will this work for the Wii? Or do I need something different? Where would be the best place to get whatever it is I need? I have ordered the component AV cable from dealextreme. Is it any use to me?

I also have a Samsung 32'' LCD TV which can be used occasionally for the Wii. Will the cable from dealextreme be good for this one or the cable that comes with the Wii?

The wii will be fine out of the box. However if that 22" TV supports proper scart then it's worth getting a scart cable since the picture quality from the pack in cables is woeful.
