    folks

no idea where to post this but i have been having some pains around my chest last few days, and went to a gp tonight who said there was sfa wrong with me basically but told me to get to tallaght for an electrocardiogram assessment.

any idea can you do this on the day or is there a waiting list for months/years....? also what will this cost?

i have been putting on a brave face all day at work (and yesterday) no idea whats up. seem to be out of breath alot, and even lying down sleeping is an ordeal.

I had one before... its one that looks like the graphs they produce from an earthquake. pain free, quick. nothing to get worked up about. just go get it done and see what they say:)

i get these every now and again as i have a heart murmur, nothing to worry about very simple and quick. generally you just go to the hostpital with a letter from your GP on a given day that the hospital does the ecg's and wait your turn.

it takes about 5-10 minutes. they just stick some pads around your chest and as you lie down and stay still for a minute or two. its totally painless, just watch out for the gel it can be cold as hell! :)

I'm a cardiac technician though not in Tallaght so I don't know how their waiting system works, did your GP give you a letter to bring with you or is an app being sent out? In the hospital l work in if a letter is given you can come in at your own convenience and the test is done straight away in outpatients. I don't think we actually charge for them either as GP referrals but l could be wrong about that. The test takes quite literally 2 minutes, it's a few electrodes on the chest and limbs and a page is printed straight away. I wouldn't be too worried about anything unless your doctor says otherwise, a lot of different things can cause what you're describing.

There is no wait at all.

don't know how GP referral works, but is almost always the day you turn up at your convenience - call the department and ask them the best time for you when the wait is shortest.

You go to the right before the reception desk, through 2 sets of double doors and it is the last room on the left before the next corridor if I recall.

You go to the outpatients. Look for the cardiac desk on the right. Then they take your doctors note and send you to sit in the corridor. You wait until called and then they bring you in and do it. It took them about two minutes. I asked the nurse how was it and she said the results get sent to my doctor - however - if she saw anything serious - she would summon a doctor there and then.

I was fine and out within half an hour (at 10 in the morning)

i'd have some advice for ya mate

    1) Follow the signs....Tallaght OPD is like a maze
    2) Bring a newspaper
    3) Don't stress it. The test takes like 2 mins, no pain etc. If there is anything sus on the scan a doc will look at it fairly sharpish in the hospital, if it seems alright you'll hear from your GP in a few days I'd say.

Don't think there is any charge for it either if there is it'll be a small one.
