Netgear Problem?

I have a wired Netgear modem connected to my desk top computer. I also got a usb wireless adaptor with it that I understood I could use with my laptop to connect to the Internet.
When I put the wireless adaptor into the usb port on my laptop it recognises the wired netgear modem straight away. It also appears in Network connections on my laptop and says the connection is excellent.
However I cannot access the Internet on my laptop using this device. Is there something else I have to do? Do I have to configure it in some wat? Can anybody help please? Jess

if the router is wired and has a few spare ports, connect in a ethernet cable into the router to check to make sure the router is connecting to the internet.

If it is then we'll check the wireless settings. You should have received an ip address somewhere in the manual to access the setup or the router. This will allow you to check your wireless settings. Set up everything without security (only for testing at the moment). Oh you'll have to do this while connected to the router using the ethernet cable.

Once you have the settings done, disconnect the cable from the laptop and plug in your wireless adapter. You should see a computer screen with semi-circles coming away from it. Double click on this. This will show you the ip address you got from the router. It should by default be something like 192.168.XXX.XXX. if its not then post back and we can try some other things.
