Ok I've a budget of about €1000, I'm getting a laptop that wil do all the basics for college work and that will be able to play the latest games, idealy I'd get the one below from Dell but that cost €1453. is there any other laptops aroud that will do the business, what about Cantec, Dixons or PC Worlds range?

I'd be playing games like Football Manager a hell of alot for certain, I haven't had a PC in awhile but I do know I'd like to be able to play the latest games that come out with decent quality.

Check out Dell Vostro on their business page. You can kit out the 1500 with roughly the same spec's - 2Ghz Core 2 Duo, 2Gb Ram, 8600GT, webcam, bluetooth etc for under 1k inc delivery and vat, but you will be minus a few features such as the fingerprint reader.

For new games, the 8600Gt is the bare minimum to enjoy games at reasonable quality (Call of Duty 4 etc, at native res medium settings). For Football manager, virtually anything would be sufficient. For someone only playing the very odd game, or older ones such as Half Life 2, the newer Orange Box, games that are fairly hardware friendly, the 8400GS is excellent for such purposes and will save you a bit of cash.

Pc World and Dixons do some decent entry level machines but for gaming, they won't offer much for 1k.

Sony Center are currently selling a good laptop for 999, can't remember the exact model, 1.8Ghz Core 2, 2gb and Ram and 8400GT. While it's not as well spec'd as the Dell, it is a Sony after all if you're inclined to lean towards style...and is still adequate for most new games at reasonable settings.
