Beer no longer in plastic neck holders.

Probably me being a pedantic git, but I've noticed that more and more beer suppliers are no longer putting those plastic rings around the necks of cans of beer. (you know the ones that fish get stuck in).
As a result, everytime I buy beer now, it means even if I get 4 cans, I have to buy a plastic bag, instead of just grabbing a 4-pack and walking out. (normally I do re-use bags, but I often pop into the offy on spec)
The off license people tell me this seems to be coming in slowly and so far its in place with Miller, Guiness, Harp and some others.

Is it a fair trade off from an environmental point of view to scrap the plastic ring on one hand, but increase the amount of carrier bags used when people buy the product?

Bring a reusable bag around in the back of the car/bike?

That, or how about asking the proprietor to stock paper bags?

just take one of the cardboard holders for a sixer of bottles.
you can usually squeeze the cans in
