Got a very nice little nas drive in maplin last week it was on sale only cost €50

Wasnt expecting much from it but it turns out to be pretty good. Ftp, smb etc.

No brand name just generic enclosure but very good for the price.

Hey ya saw that drive in there a few weeks ago meant to post a tread but forgot about it,

    Fair play to ya.

Remember the packaging now, is it a ide or a sata hdd. I've a 500 geg ide lying around that I must stick into something.

    Cheers Briman

If this is the one then that is a good price. Works great with XBMC :D

It would have to be a gigabit connection for me. I may not have a gigabit switch at home but thats something i will be getting.

If I got this case and decided to remove the Hard Drive from an external Drive Ihave would it work in it once its IDE? would I have to reformat or would I get away with just putting it in?

should just work :) so long as your original drive is an IDE

Yeah sweet price for that, and a good way to use up any old IDE hard drives knocking about.

Sorry for going a bit OT, but in what way does this enclosure work great with XBMC?

I have my XBMC'd Xbox lying idle, and considiering using this Xbox primarily as a media centre when I move into new house.

Turn PC on, NAS is accessible on the network. Download "whatever" to NAS.
Whenever the Xbox is on it can access the NAS. No need to leave a computer turned on.
Absolutely great setup. Anybody I've shown my setup to has suddenly needed to go out and get an old Xbox.

Thanks for reply. There could be uses for me ol' Xbox yet! I was considering selling it, but I don't think I will now :)

I presume this is why it's considered Xbox-friendly?

Although this NAS cannot use NTFS (from what has been posted here), XBMC has no problem with ntfs formatted drives... All my shares are on NTFS drives.

the fat 32 limit just means you cant have any partition bigger than 32gb might be worth keeping in mind before getting this

Are you sure? I thought you could have partitions of around a couple of terabytes. You won't be able to store files over 4GBs though. So not too good if you like to store massive files.

AlmightyCushion is correct. You can have it formatted as one large partition but with FAT32 you can't have files over 4GB (DVD ISOs)

I know someone who picked up a media enclosure for €64 in maplin yesterday. It takes standard IDE drives, has a remote and vga out etc so you can play divx movies and mp3's directly from the drive.

Its funny, when he told me about it first he said it was 500gb.. i was shocked and asked was he sure? I told him a 500gb hard drive alone would cost more than that :D I opened it up for him and there was no drive... :D
Still €64 is not too bad for a media enclosure.

Following on from the NAS enclosure, where special offer has expired.

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=221890&C=Newsletter&U=08P01-1_S2&T=-10970572

£80stg for 250GB NAS (again FAT32, and no USB).

These are great - but they are constant Maplin specials (I have 2). They ramp the price up into the 90s, and then sudden they drop into the 50s/60s for special offers every 3 or 6 months (as I said I have 2). I have one in the hall beside my router and run it all the time - it powers down the disk when idle.

These are actually rebadged by a number of manufacturers, I've upgraded mine a few times, the last link I used is currently down http://www.station-drivers.com/page/landisk.htm but google and you'll find a number of resources.
