I'm trying to purchase something from Amazon.co.uk (doesn't seem to be an amazon.ie) with my laser (or maestro) card and it is asking for an issue number or a start date. However I have no idea…

You can't use laser in the uk, they have 'switch' cards.
Credit card only on Amazon.

Laser only work in Ireland.
Some UK shops will take it as a courtesy.
