Anyone know any film music companies to start work for?

    Hi lads,
I'm looking to get into the film music industry. I know its a hard industry to get into, and I'll probably never succeed and all that, but does anyone know any companies that create music for films and media.

I know its a very broad and probably stupid question. But basically I'm sick of my current job which is nothing to do with music (callcentre) and Waterford is such a small city that no companies of that kind will ever be here or even be in Ireland. So I've decided that its time to do what a lot of successful people have done - work for free for a company doing anything at all - like cleaning floors so that I can get some sort of experience in film music. It starts with cleaning floors for free, then goes upwards from there lol...

Anyhoo, as my initial question, does anyone know of any companies in Ireland, or anywhere in the world, that compose music for film. I am a composer myself. I know a lot of film music is composed specifically by a composer and then arranged usually by someone else, and then recorded, but is there any large companies that do this work themselves?

    Thanks for any replies :)

I don't think you'll get your music into film by sweeping floors anywhere! If I was in your position I would approach film production companies, give them samples of your work, ask them what they have coming up and what they have in mind for the music and then write something for them. You'll probably get the door shut in your face and a few hundred rejections but if you keep trying properly AND you're good, you'll probablt get something happening. Best of luck!

There's a film production forum over there.

I'm sure there are people there who make the odd budget flick, you could offer your services for free. I don't know how it would work out but it's a start.

Thanks very much for the replies :)
I have a few friends in amateur films that always need music, so now that I almost have a good bedroom recording setup ready I can start to get some good samples recorded

You could try submitting work to libraries.

Its a fine career to aspire to but you will find it incredibly difficult to break in to. Unless you end up in Hollywood its not likely you'd get salaried anywhere for doing something like this (although its possible I'm wrong here), if you were to get work its more likely you'd get paid for writing music independently and submitting it, and later if/when you become better known, you might be commissioned to write pieces.

Start from the ground up - write music for your friends' films and hope they get noticed. There are various artistic collectives/organisations around the country that you might join and that might offer support. It may be worth applying to the Arts Council for a grant if you intend to do this full time. And ask in the Film Production forum for further advice from people in that field. Best of luck with it and let us know how you get on.

    Try here aswell

    www.filmakersnetwork.ie

They are very knowledgeable and helpful on that site. I know there are some
courses that can be done online, from what I remember they were expensive
    though.

    Best of luck
