Annoying earthy/musty smell from hot water

For the last few months, we've had quite a bit of sediment in our water, and this has led to the hot water from the cylinder smelling a bit bad. I would like to know if anyone has experience of flushing/draining sediment from a hot water cylinder?

Have you eliminated the source of the sediment?

No, we cant, its just in the supply. Best we can do is flush out, clean and disinfect the plumbing once in a while.
