Thats amazing to hear.Surely they are trying to establish a base of customers. I have had Setanta since the start of August after getting two free months from purchasing some Adidas deodorant. After that they gave it to me half price (€9) per month for Oct,Nov,Dec. I was half thinking of continuing for the €18. However, I can definately say that I will be cancelling my Setanta sub during the first week of Jan well before my direct debit is due.

They will need to start dividing their packages. People don't want all the channels. eg I support Man Utd, so I don't need Liverpool TV, likewise Celtic supporters don't need Rangers TV, not everyone likes golf or American sports.
They are just money grabbers who are obviously desperate for our cash. This is not the right way to go about it IMO.
    :D

can they just up the price like that without informing customers. i havent heard anything from them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,889 ✭✭✭cgarvey

Nor have I, and I'll be reversing my DD if they don't notify me. Maybe it doesn't apply to existing customers for a while yet, or something.

It is illegal for them to increase the price without prior notification.

    check your T&C

    2. Subscription Payments

    (a) Unless otherwise agreed you will be charged for the Service from the date your Digibox is enabled to receive the Service under this Contract.
    (b) You must pay us Subscription Payments in advance for the Option that you have chosen in your Contract. For Direct Debit, Debit and Credit Card payments we will collect the amount due automatically from your account each month (or as otherwise agreed in your Option) after we have enabled your Viewing Card to receive the Service.
    (c) To the extent permitted by Luxembourg laws, we may change your Subscription Payment at any time by giving you at least one month's notice. However, during the Minimum Term, unless it is for a reason set out in Conditions 2(d) or 2(e) we may increase your Subscription Payment only once. Any increase during the Minimum Term will not be more than the greater of: (i) 20%; or (ii) the increase in the United Kingdom Retail Price Index over the last twelve months before we tell you about the price increase.
    (d) Your Subscription Payment may change at any time if you change your Option and you will immediately pay the current price for that new Option from the date you change your Option.
    (e) We may also increase your Subscription Payment, if required by law or if any regulatory authority requests or requires a change to any aspect of our pricing which affects your Subscription Payment. We may also charge any other payment due under this Contract under your Direct Debit, Debit, or Credit Card instructions together with any other payments which you agree that we may charge under that instruction.
    (f) We may alter your Direct Debit, Debit or Credit Card instruction if your Subscription Payment changes for any reason.
    (g) We may refuse your application for subscription to the Service based on the results of an assessment of your credit standing using credit searches. We may from time to time assess your credit standing during your subscription; we will apply reasonable practices for the administration of your account based on the result of that credit search, including if we believe it is reasonable applying different payment terms to your account. We may use information from, and supply information to, outside agencies for this credit searching.
    (h) A reasonable non-refundable registration fee shall be paid by you with the first Subscription Payment due for the Service under this Contract. Also we can charge a reasonable non-refundable administration fee if you want to change your Service and we allow this.
    (i) If you have missed any payments you owe to us, we can suspend provision of the Service without giving you notice. This does not affect our right to end the Contract under Condition 8 below.

Got a letter yesterday informing me of increase.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 358 ✭✭dkane

When did the increase come into effect? I have Setanta since last December. Paid for 12 months up front at €15. They would ave been due to bill me for the coming year around the 10th Dec. I haven't got my bank statement yet but wondering if I will have been charged €18 or €19.99/month.
Again, I got no notice of the increase.

Looks like the relevant condition, however that doesn't affect the Direct Debit contract.

    http://www.setanta.com/en/ROI/How-to-subscribe/

It seems that now you can subscribe for a month,2 months or for whatever part period you want for €19.99

The sting is that to pay for this new fleibility they are charging the higher price.

Also in a double stupid undemocratic move, they've introduced a €10 connect fee so that will be €29.99 please:rolleyes:

It appears to be their way to discourage the hop on hop off type subscriber.

They don't say there how to unsubscribe.
In my case I don't think it's a simple case of ringing sky as I remember I first subscribed via the setanta website just giving cc details and my sky card number.
I'd imagine I have to ring Setanta?
Ringing sky might block the channels alright but not the setanta payment as it's taken directly by setanta and not by Sky in my case.
    Thoughts?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

Ringing Sky will do nothing if you want to cancel. It is Setanta you will need to deal with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,889 ✭✭✭cgarvey

Setanta changed to monthly contracts (1 month min term) a few months ago.

Received the letter yesterday, so all is above board, it seems.

As I type I'm on hold to their "programme advisor"
He's offering me reduced rates to keep me but I have relented.

However he says despite the fact that I first subscribed in january (the 7th) that they must have 30 days notice to cancel the sub.Ergo I must ring again on the 6th and they will charge me the €19.99 and I will though have an extra month of setanta.
    Thievery to be honest:mad:

I was asked loads of questions and having heard it all before(skys "programme advisors"do this aswell) ,I answered with I don't know...as any other answer would have kept me on for ages more whilst they try to "fix" the problem of me leaving...

Honestly it's like trying to leave a religious cult or something :mad:

They want you to call them again? That's a bit poor tbh. With Sky you only need to call them once and they will turn it off after a month.

When cancelling tell them you are moving to Hong Kong. You can't bring it with you there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 833 ✭✭✭batman2000

I got the letter today. It was dated December 11th and the increase is from January 1st. In the T&C I thought it read one months notice. They haven't given me one month's notice only 1 week! Also the letter is dated December 11th so that isn't one month either !

Lol I'm thinking of asking them to pay for the tickets to Hong Kong aswell.

getting rid of them i think. apart from what seems to be an effort on their part to make sure every liverpool game is on tv (nothing to do with them carrying lfc) they price increases are getting too frequent, third in a year if i remember correctly. would rather give the 15 euros to sky for HD service every month

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,138 ✭✭✭snaps

Get rid of both Sly & Setanta. Get a digitalb sub. Much better value.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,165 ✭✭✭fish fingers

gotta agree with you on digitalb. So handy;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 390 ✭✭Dec4

Subscribed to Racing UK (Setanta) last April which was then min 1 year contract, anyone know if I could use this price increase to opt out of contract or am I stuck with €20/month for next 5 months?
    TIA

It was a bit steep at 18 euro but not they're taking the p*ss. Defo canceling mine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 343 ✭✭aidz

i was consdering getting it onto my satellite. i realise the difference is only €2, but straw-camels-back...
not just ruling it out yet just yet....have to investigate how much sky sports is first (although the gaa on setanta has big appeal to me)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,924 ✭✭✭Cork

    digitalb. So handy

Sorry for my complete lack of knowledge - what is digitalb?

Can you get it on your sky dish?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,138 ✭✭✭snaps

No mate, you need a fixed or motorised dish able to pick up 16 east satellite. Really for Ireland 90cm-1m dish is minimum for good signal during OUR bad weather. The reciever must be able to decode conax (Technomate 1500 is the best option & best value for money). A Digitalalb sports card is approx €235 for 12 months. You get all the sky/setanta soccer plus loads more. If you google "alsat" forum they are giving away a free patchable reciever at the moment with a 12 months supersports card for £159+£20 P&P to Ireland. (Hope i havent broken any rules with this post?)

Any system that uses an official subscription + official card to get only what you paid for + free channels is acceptable.

Happy New Year folks. As per my earlier post re Setanta price increase... I am posting my letter of cancellation today to Setanta(Also phoning them)and posting a letter to bank to hold direct debit just in case payment goes through.

Cancelling on a matter of principal. I am not paying for a load of channels I don't want. They need to tier their packages or they will lose lots of punters. I support Man Utd, why would I contribute to Celtic,Rangers and Liverpool TV with all due respect to those great clubs. I don't want NASN,and Racing TV either. If they gave me Setanta Ireland and SS1 for €10 per month I would probably go for it. Radio 5 live and watching most of the Setanta Utd matches down the local will do me.

If Arsenal TV doesn't meet my expectations then I will also be cancelling.

arsenal tv will like liverpool tv just highlights

just buy the official updated history of arsenal on dvd as its much better value than arsenal tv

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

Does the DVD also include full replays of all their matches? Your response is a load of ****e.

Another reason for me to have cancelled with all due respect to the Gunners!
May not be a good idea for all these clubs to push their channels through one provider if the provider sells them as all inclusive. Many other punters like me will not want to be contributing to the coffers of rival clubs I would think.

Signed up in February 2007 at €15 per month by phone. Setanta put the price up a week later in March to €18 - the maximum rise permitted under the contract. Rang to find out what was up.

Call centre guy told me I should have been warned about the increase. Also received two days written notice not 30 days required under the contract.

Told him I wanted to cancel. Said I couldn't I was signed up for a 12 month contract. Told him I was not told of the cooling off period or an advance of 30 days. Told me they were changed to operating under Luxembourg Law and I could effectively B***er off.

Apparently there is nothing I can do until this month. BTW they have instituted a second increase on my account in 12 months. Again in breach of contract

No one in Setanta had the good sense to extend my €15 for three months because they knew they had me over a barrel.

Everything about I've experienced is crap from their geriatric line-ups for sports commentators to just sub-standard service and programming.

I am hoping they bite the dirt as soon as possible.

Hi Folks, as per earlier post I cancelled Setanta and currently "working my notice" of 30 days until the end of Jan. Just received a letter imploring me to stay and they will give me another 3 months at half price which they say is €9 per month and it will revert to €18 after that. Considering it at the moment but I will probably still quit as it was a bit off hassle to get this far, ie long phone calls etc... At the end of the day I will eventually have to pay full price and receive loads of channels I do not want so whats the point. I suppose by taking this stance they may review their package policy in the future. anyone any comments...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 520 ✭✭✭5h4mr0(k

They did the same with me - after a long phone call to get disconnected - then the letter in the post offering me the next 3 months at €9. I resisted.

The day before the disconnection date they called me to offer me the next month for free, but then going to the regular price. (I resisted).

    Hi there,

I have an existing sub with Sky/Setanta. I have checked the current pricing as my sub is due to be renewed. The ROI price is €19.99 (£15.89), and the UK price is £9.99(€12.57). These are as of 17 May 2008.

Going on these prices, they are ripping us off, by over charging us by €7.42 or £5.90 per month, or over 12 months this is a €89.04 or £70.80 rip off.

Surely this is taking the P!SS out of the Irish again. I only payed €220 for my multiroom sub with Setanta last year, ie two subs. So for one box this year its gonna cost €240, and half that for the second box. Thats one third of the price you'd pay to Sky for a full package per single sub.

I've contacted Setanta, BCI and Comreg, but it will probably go on deaf ears, can only wait and see if anyone bothers to respond with something worthwhile.

For that extra Eur89 you get an additional 46 premiership games. That Eur1.93 per 3.00pm saturday game. Plus champions league games, f1, and some Cup winners cup games.

All of the above are not available on an England/Wales or Scottish sub.

I would call that good value for eur7.41 per month!!

I understand what you say regarding Premiership soccer, but F1 is on Itv, Champions League & Uefa Cup matches are on Itv regions and Five, which you don't pay for. So I take it that you mean take the 46 Premiership games and call it quids. Looks like thats me told.:(

There are thousands of Irish with access to Five. I could name a good load, as I supplied a number of them with cards. Plenty around the south-east and north-east get Five. I could have also said Tv3, which main land UK customers don't get.

The difference is nearly half a monthly sub cost for one channel, and I still don't think we should have to pay more just because we live in a different region. Look at Sky they supply free 2mb DSL BB to UK customers, which we don't get. It works both ways, just depends where you live, and what you can or can't receive, surely.

I would say less than thousands. Fair enough to people you supplied cards to but I only know 1 person who has one of those cards, no one else.

I rang up Setanta yesterday to cancel my sub. They asked me why and i told them that €20 is too much, so they offered me a 6 month sub for €7.50 instead. I said ok but im probably just gonna ring u back up in 6 months again to cancel it again but he told me that i might be offered same deal then.

So id recommend anyone with a setanta sub to do the same. I signed for setanta last august, im not sure if you need to be with them a certain amount of time to get the €7.50 offer for 6 months.
