I'm currently looking at a few different breeds of dogs with the possibility of getting one next summer and would like to find out more about a certain type I have seen lately.

The dog has a medium coat and is tan/black & white. I have seen it on a dog food ad on TV.

It has a look of a sheep dog to it also.....

    Bernese Mountain Dog?

The colours are similar but I'm sure the one I saw recently didn't have as much black in its coat and was leaner than the ones shown on this website.

Could be a tri colour Border Collie or a Kelpie(but I doubt it's this one).
You will need to the consider the type of lifestyle you live & what breed might fit best into you family rather than just what the dog looks like.
Do some research on the net, I'm sure you'll find the perfect dog.

The Bernese is certainly closest to what I seen. I've read a bit on the Bernese and they seem suited to families.

Hopefully the next time I see that jogger out by me I can stop them and ask what the dog is...

If you could be clearer about which dog food was being advertised, it would be a help!

The Bernese mountain dog is actually one of the most overbred and unhealthy breeds of the last decade.
They came into fashion big time and every Tom, Dick and Harry started producing (not breeding, producing) them.

The breed standard was set for ever bigger, bulkier dogs. As a consequence they now suffer from bone and joint problems and drop like flies from heart disease.

I would stay well away, if I was you.

There are good breeders with healthy dogs out there ...rare as hen's teeth though.

Probably Pedigree Chum....is there any other?

Well, the dog here http://www.uk.pedigree.com/ could be a basset hound, possibly - others will be more definite, no doubt.

The Pedigree ad only has a pup basset

    This is Bailey;

How the dog is raised has FAR more to do with how good it is with children, than with its breed.

true, but I have a much better chance of getting a dog that is generally regarded as friendly dog with kids than a doberman when it comes to choosing one with my wife

My son is three years old and my Pit Bulls love him to bits, the only one I have to watch around my son is my old Lurcher and even that isn't malice, he's just ALWAYS hungry and 3 yro tend to carry biccies in their trouser pockets :D.

If it's the same ad i'm thinking of then it is a bernese mountain dog, his name in the ad is Bernie and the ad goes something like, all through the house was quiet while bernie, can't remember the rest.
We had a pyrenean mountain dog when i was young and i'd say they'd be similar in temperament to the bernese, so i hope you're not house proud.

to be honest I can't remember how teh ad goes....I'll keep an eye out for it again

The bernese looks too strong to be the dog you're thinking of (without seeing the ad again). It looks gorgeous though.

I think that the dog in question might be a border collie (with brown added to the usual black and white colouring).
