    Hello there,

I've been playing Ibanez guitars for the first time recently and I'm really impressed. Was wondering if anyone here has played this model?

    http://www.thomann.de/ie/ibanez_rg2550exgk_egitarre.htm

Seems to be exactly what I'm looking for but to be honest, Ibanez product codes and whatnot have me very confused. What's the difference between all these? They're all 2550s but I have to admit, I have no clue what the additional letting is about? I'd hate to spring fo one and then realise that actually, I should have gone for the GBKXX9000 model :)

    Ibanez RG2550EX
    Ibanez RG2550EXGK Prestige

The basic model # is the RG2550.
The last letters of Ibanez model codes indicate the colour, in this case, GK - Galaxy Black. Or VBBF - vibrant blue flat.

I wouldnt worry about the rest of it (E, EX), there's been various minor revisions from year to year (dot inlays/lightning inlays....3pc neck/5pc neck) etc, and they just distinguish one model from another.

They're all the same basic guitar RG2550.

It's a killer guitar, stock pickups are 7/10 but in all other aspects its fantastic. Personally im not a fan of the aesthetics, but if you like it yourself, go for it.

Also note - there'll be a new model for the 2008 year. It has a new trem, the Edge Zero, which looks to be a fantastic design. Models with the new EZ trem will be distinguished with a 'z' suffix after the basic model code.

So you might want to wait for that. Or, you might want to see if you can pick up a 2007 model discounted.

Basicly what he said, id adivise putting a new set of pickups into the budget though as ibanez are famed for there weak stock pickups but pretty much good everything else.

Thanks for the info gents. I'm an awfully impulsive person so it would be hard to hang on for those 2008 models. This is the worst GAS attack I've had in some time, I've been able to fend it off for about 2 years now but perhaps no more.

We'll see what financial state I'm in after Christmas and see how it goes. It's annoying about the pickups though. Initially I thought they were real DiMarzios but obviously not. Just seems a shame to make a great guitar and not finish it off with the PUs it deserves. Might pick up some duncans for this if I do go ahead and give in to the GAS.

Oh, and I can safely predict now that Thomann will ruin me financially before too long. :)

The Dimarzio/IBZ pickups are real dimarzio's. They're made in the same factory as any other dimarzio pickup, to the same standards.

The reason they might get a bad rap is that they're voiced to be pretty middle-of-the-road. So that they suit as many guitars, amps and players as possible. This means they don't particularly excel at anything and are fairly unremarkable tone-wise. 'Jack of all trades' type thing.

Pickups are a personal choice, they could stick high-end pickups in there and the situation would be the same, loads of people would still hate them and swap them out for something else.
