I have the exact same problem, i and use eircom broadband. I replaced my laptop about four weeks ago, and since i've set it up again, i am getting the same display message. It happens if i use the usb OR ethernet cable. I found if i put the two of them in together - it works fine.

Sorry, this may not be of much help to you

A bit more info would be useful, did you or someone else use a dial up connection on this PC? if so you may want to change the connection settings:

    open iexplore
    tools
    Internet Options
    Connection Tab
    check "never dial a connection"

Also is the PC a dell laptop? Dells generally disable the ethernet port when running on battery to save power - you can change this setting in the control panel
