Sikth/Dillinger Escape Plan/ "Math Metal"

By god I love me some Sikth and Dillinger Escape Plan.
For some reason though people just can't seem to grasp that for the most part I can't bear listening to what they'd consider to be equally heavy and technically proficient music. I'm talking long frizzy hair, painted on leather pants, guitar solo every minute, recorded with the assistance of a wind machine and a platter of cheese type stuff.

Infact the only band that I can listen to that fits into this description would be Pantera. I actually love Pantera. The likes of Slayer, Dream Theater, Opeth, etc., I just can't stand.

This is coming from a guy that has been playing guitar for nearly 11 years and was mad into Joe Satriani, etc when I was younger. Infact, without the likes of such cheese ridden music I probably wouldn't be the guitarist I am today.

What really kills me is looking for a band. Anyone that is in anyway good at there instrument wants to play wánk solos all day and sing about fire and dragons.

Anyone else in the same position is me?

    not really :p
i listen to a lot of metal. i find it odd that DEP are one of the few you seem to be into - they're not exactly the most accessible of bands. they are, however, ****ing awesome. i am looking forward to the gig in....february??

Oh you better believe I'll be at that gig.

    Good for you.

I don't like Japanese horror films either, Karl.

    Only messing.

Sikth are a great band. Will be interesting to see what they do about replacing their singers.

Pantera are about leather pants and cheese? Singing about dragons and fire? Opeth? Slayer? Oh dearie me. Perhaps there are other issues with you finding a band?

It wasn't me!, obviously I was taking this piss ever so slightly with those statements!

And Pantera were all about the leather pants and cheese in the early days :-p

The likes of slayer and opeth I just really, really can't get to like. I've tried, I've given loads of listens, something which I do for any band that people have nothing but praise for.

I'm not trying to give off a "look at how diverse my music tastes are but also notice how much it takes to impress me musically" vibe like Karl's nice and blunt post back would have you believe. It's just nobody I meet ever wants to play that sort of style of metal.

Between the buried and me > Everything...

Selkies has one of the greatest solo's of all time imo...

Sorry Pauleeeeeeee (if that is your real name!), if I'm flippant it's because I find your comments a little ridiculous. For example, I think Opeth are the very antithesis of the "long frizzy hair, painted on leather pants, guitar solo every minute, recorded with the assistance of a wind machine and a platter of cheese type stuff" you talk about, so I did take your post with a pinch of salt.

On a more serious note, I'll take it you've heard Meshuggah, yes?

    Meshuggah
This thread is suddenly looking up... Superb band.

To be honest DEP's new stuff is a huge crock of sh1te IMO. Haven't listened to enough of Sikth to judge them really. I doubt if they can touch Meshuggah from the little that I've heard of them though.

SikTh have a couple of meshuggah type riffs, but they do verge on hardcore quite often. If you like meshuggah check out tesseract and periphery.

I find it a bit odd that you are talking about Opeth and Slayer as if they were the same type of metal. I really don't think that they have anything in common apart from distorted guitars, Opeth are a much more interesting band (IMO) with acoustic guitars and different time signature changes, where as Slayer its just really about speed and a main riff (IMO again).

I personally love Opeth and apart from the odd song can't really stand Slayer so maybe i'm a bit biased

Just checked these out... amazing! Nice one dude.

Both Tesseract and Periphery are excellent, but the guitarist from Periphery also does this: http://www.myspace.com/iambulb

And tbh, I prefer his "Bulb" stuff.

Has this Bulb guy been around long?

I remember a couple of years ago there was a guy on the Chimaira fanboard putting up links to some stuff he was recording himself and it was all under the name bulb, Music was kinda the same......could just be a coincidence. Still have all the songs on my mp3 player!

    EDIT: Just checked!It was him!!
He put this link up on the thread to check out his songs

They both left at the end of the last tour, its a real shame cause they gave them something extra!

This is one of the funniest things I've read in ages. Epic whizz-taking!

Seeing as you made me laugh, here's some random possibilities you can take or leave because I'm too tired to justify them: :p
    Coroner
    Watchtower
    Spastic Ink
    Atheist
    Coprofago
    Necrophagist
    Pavor
Odious Mortem / Severed Savior / Decrepit Birth

The possibility you'll like theses bands begins to decrease at a breathtaking rate at roughly the halfway stage and I frankly only included the last few because it was either that or start questioning this thread. I don't want to do that because I'm feeling pretty jolly right about now.

Yep, that's my real name, minus the eight e's at the end :D

I do like Meshuggah quite a bit. Not as much as Dillinger or Sikth though...maybe it has something to do with them being a bit quirkier or something that appeals to my taste.

I'm dying to have a listen to a few of the bands listed here but for some godforsaken reason I'm in the back arse of Meath right now on a brutal dial up connection. Should be back to civilisation (Dublin) in a few days though so should be able to listen then.

As Beekay said they both left at the end of the last tour.

Strange thing is they're only advertising for a vocalist and not vocalistS on their website.
I really do love the singers but I think getting a new singer could be a good thing for the band. The two singers they had are like Marmite to alot of people. Sikth are a band that I'd love to see getting alot more recognition and maybe by getting just one singer that has a voice that would appeal to more people they might be able to do that.

Google Mathcore, you'll find a few more bands you'll like.

I don't listen to DEP or Sikth so I dunno exactly what to recommend in the same vein, but check out older Fear Before The March Of Flames stuff. You'll probably like their Art Damage record.

    Check this out:

Liking heavy guitar music that doesn't come from a stereotypically "metal" place is awesome.

Did Sikth have a song about a loser that worked at a bar or something, and then his girlfriend cheated on him so he wanders about in the desert? The song might not even be about that, but the CG video was.

If that was them, well lets just say the missus probably cheated on him for liking that band.

Why has no one mentioned Converge in this thread? AWESOME band! Check out Jane Doe - my favourite album of theirs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 184 ✭✭SxE Punk

Probably because Converge are a hardcore/metalcore kinda band.

Mudvayne's break through album LD50 should suit you.Great album.

Oh god Tesseract and Periphery are fantastic!!!! Too little of their stuff though, give me more!!!!! I have been searching for something to give me goose bumps the way From Mars to Sirus did a few months ago (I came late to the Gojira party)

To ask a question that slightly deviates from the topic, what exactly is 'deathcore'?
The term seems to be flying about a lot at the moment. Is it a mix of death metal and hardcore or Gothenburg sound or something? Do bands actually say 'yes, we're a deathcore band' or is it more of a non existent 'media/internet lazily labelled' type of thing? Either way, it sounds stupid.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,312 ✭✭✭pbsuxok1znja4r

It's just a label. I'm sure deathcore itself sounds far more stupid, lol. Only bands I'm fairly certain that are "deathcore" are Job for a Cowboy and Dr. Acula. Check 'em out. Not my kind of thing at all but I know some good dudes who still love JfaC, at least.

On a slightly related note, I hate that there's UK bands appearing lately being touted as "math-rock" (i.e. Foals), when there's absolutely nothing "math" about what they play.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 184 ✭✭SxE Punk

Despite their strange and not even slightly brutal yet very hilarious name, Job For A Cowboy are a sweet death metal band, a guy who was in my college turned me onto them last year and I was very impressed.

Despite the fact that he went to Killswitch Engage.

I don't know if they're as mathematical as others mentioned, definitely some elements...but I absolutely adore them. Can't stop listening to 'you fail me' as of late. Definitely worth a listen if you like the others.

Was listening to Jane Doe. Thought a resurrection of this thread would be fitting. I ****ing adore this type of music. Keep it goin' lads.

I love DEP at the moment,I think Ire works is a lot better than miss machine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,020 ✭✭✭Ardscoil Ris

Dillinger are my favourite band. They have evolved beyond math core. Every Time I Die's Last Night in Town Album is better than any DEP album, but they went rapidly downhill after that. Ire Works was amazing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 145 ✭✭kevin_de_big

I'd be in the opposite camp. Admittedly though, I didn't give Ire Works as much time as miss machine. Are they writing new material at the moment?

I know most of the older fans are annoyed at how they changed styles but if they had released another "calculating infinty" I think it would get a bit repetitive.
I think with all the crazy stuff from their back catalogue it's not much harm to throw in a few more "mellow" (by DEP standards) tunes to stop it from getting tiring.

And yes, they are recording a new album :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 267 ✭✭redenemyjoe

Sikth are without a doubt up there as one of my all time favourite bands. Pure genius, excellent music.

Just to plug my mates a bit, they recorded with Dan and Justin in WellarHill, you must know them at this stage. Hero In Error Both Dan and Justin feature on the recordings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,658 ✭✭✭Patricide

I think that your own bnd(if your in red enemy as your name would suggest) and hero in error are doing a fairly bitchin job at flying the flag for irish metal at ze moment.

Now going back on topic, yeah im in a similar position, got obsessed on the likes of sikth/dillenger/meshuggah/tesseract/periphery/bulb type of music recently. Noone else i know really likes math metal so its a kinda frustrating thing when i try to throw a cd on and everyone else says to turn off that ****e.

A band you should really check out are Architects. There new album hollow crown should be RIGHT up your alley.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 267 ✭✭redenemyjoe

I got very bored of Architects, used to be really into them. It's a Sikth attempt with Comeback Kid vocals.

You should without hesitation, everyone, check out Textures. Seriously, also Tesseract.

Also, people will inevitably enjoy After The Burial, you don't get much more tech than that. For me, I need a bit more feeling in the sound of an album.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 122 ✭✭Tarzan_man

If you want some lighter airier stuff but still tech you should try The Human Abstract, Protest the Hero, Cynic and Between the Buried and Me.

I've been giving Ire Works more of my time recently. Greg's voice is absolutely great. In a way, I'd love for them to do a double cd, one side being chaotic, the other being more representative of their alternative leanings.

Good call, these bands are pretty damn tech. If covers are your thing (with a tech twist) check out BTBAM, not my cup of tea but they have a pretty strong fanbase.

PTH are like the mainstream version of maths.
