The bishops

    Bishops warn of 'spiritual erosion'

The Catholic and Church of Ireland bishops of Clogher have criticised the "slow drift into emptiness" of modern society and warned of a "world of spiritual erosion" where there is "great anxiety about a loss of the sacred.

In a joint Christmas message Catholic bishop Joseph Duffy, and Church of Ireland bishop Michael Jackson, said that modern life may be "relatively painless and comfortable" but ultimately it is "without meaning".

They called for people to become more involved in voluntary work and to be kinder to their neighbours.

The bishops also warned people to take greater care on the roads and encouraged the responsible use of alcohol particularly over the Christmas period.

So does anyone give a toss what the bishops have to say in this day and age? Personally I think that "spiritual erosion" is the one of the best things to have happened to Ireland in recent years and it needs to happen faster. The sooner more people get a grip on developing their own good moral code rather than listen to these idiots who are intent on dragging Ireland back to the Dark Ages, the better.

Is what the bishops have to say a big deal in this day and age? If not why are they still getting high-profile coverage through the national media? Do they think that lecturing people on such blindingly obvious things as being nice to your neighbours and careful driving is big and benevolent of them?

    Discuss.

Edit: just noticed their names are Joe Duffy and Michael Jackson, lol :D

I regret the way things are going but not in a religious sense. You don't have to be religious to be a decent person. But in response to your question, no, I don't think anyone takes much notice of the Bishops anymore. They need to reinvent themselves like Madonna or David Bowie

They no longer have any moral authority in Ireland.

I never much cared for religion of any kind least of all the Bible Thumpers.

Who are they to give anyone advice when all they do is run away from lifes tempations as opposed to face up to them.

    Total ****ing joke.

    Religion Be Gone.

Amazing how bishops/priests never criticise political corruption, it's all about sex and little boys....sick!

It's dangerous for them to be telling people to drive safely. Now everybody will speed up and more people will be killed.

Their problem is they are too conservative - Ireland & the world have moved on. Unless a celebrity is controversially sponsoring a religion it is un-cool
Eg; Keanu Reeves, Orlando Bloom, Richard Gere, Lisa Marie Presley, Katie Holmes, Tom Cruise

Pretty sure Scientology is still un-cool, despite the fact that *snigger* Tom Cruise is a member.

Religion isnt exactly my thing but I think its a bit sad to see how close It is to dieing out in the "land of saints and scholars"
Hopefully its all one step closer to a happy medium of people living good lives because they believe it to be right, and not just blindly and fanatically marching about beliving in idealistic self contradictionary nonsence out of fear of some fiery brimstone afterlife..

Spiritual erosion can be prevented in the same manner as coastal erosion. Giant protective sandbanks.
