Salary scales in Electronic Engineering disciplines?

Has anyone any information (or know where to find information) on the currently accepted salary scales in electronic engineering disciplines, e.g. IC design, layout, etc? I checked out the Sunday Business Post article on salaries last weekend, but as usual these areas were neglected (There was plenty of info on IT and Building-related engineering, but electronic disciplines fall outside the scope of those areas).

So basically I'm looking for salary scales from, say graduate -> project/design engineer -> senior engineer, etc.

Thanks for the replies lads. That's pretty much in line what I was thinking.

daveirl, I agree that salaries are annoying low, considering that in most cases it is a highly skilled sector. It's a factor that definitely won't entice up-and-coming grads into the area.

daveirl, I think you are being a bit pessimistic with those salaries? Although there isn't the competition for people there once was, I would have added 20% to the engineer and senior engineers salaries. Of course it does depend where you are based and if outside dublin there is much less competition for people of course. The thing I would say about these kind of salaries is that if you are good enough then you can forget averages etc and name your own pretty much.

well i'd definitely think about changing companies at least! i'd have the exact opposite experience of the negotiating skills of engineers also..

Friend of mine graduated from elec engineering in DIT and got a graduate position in ESB, €33k starting. 2 years later and now he's on €45k.

ah, didn't realise you were talking analog IC design, not very portable compared to digital design. So certainly outside of 7-8 years ago it can be affected by the lack of demand..

well outside of the biggest companies R&D is moving more and more to FPGAs rather than full custom, for digital at least. There is a reasonable amount of work for digital designers in Dublin. Certainly trying to find them is difficult. I should point out that I have recently moved away from R&D myself. Imo if you want to make good money, you need to move up to senior eng status, start running projects and team/section leading and then move into some type of management position. It is then easier to move into other industries and also insulates you a fair bit from skills outsourcing, SW design is easily outsourced, HW design not as easily but can be done, management is difficult to offshore, assuming the company has a strong Irish base and isn't going to leave altogether.
