PS3 compatability with PS2 games?

I'm looking to get a PS3 but have been told conflicting stories. Firstly that only the 60GB (which I cannot find ANYWHERE) is the only one that will play PS2 games. I've also been told that the other versions have emulation software that works fine on most games. If they had this software I would buy them in a shot but I need confirmation.

40GB will not play PS2 games.

The 60 GB PS3 are the only Irish Pal ones to have BC, the new 40GB Pal ones do not have BC.
The 60's are as rare as hens teeth now

They had a few boxes out for 60GB PS3s in PC World in Blanch, it's possible (likely?) they're out of stock but worth giving them a call anyway if you need a 60GB, in case they have any.

60GB uses ps2 hardware plus emulation software to play games

u.s 60Gb uses only Hardware to play em

new u.s 80GB uses ps2 hardware plus emulation software to play games

there all need at least some hardware to play em
40GB had last bit taken out.

But all of the websites are saying the european boxes have the software emulator and not the hardware of the 60GB so they should play most. Is not correct?

The 60 gig PS3 has compatibility, the 40 gig doesn't.

That's all you really need to know, whether it's hardware or software doesn't matter too much for 90% of games.

Even with the software emu on the 60gb PS3 it still leaves a number of titles in my collection unplayable, most worryingly Outrun 2006, very pissed off at that. I love that game!
