Just wondering what's the best program out there for making complete backups of DVD's?

Want to take a few favourites away with me and not have to worry about scratching the originals.

    Cheers!

Few threads on this already, try a search. Mac the Ripper is my personal favourite.

Also, just a note that unless this inquiry is about backing up your OWN DVD collection the query would be breaking the forum rules regarding illegal copyright infringment.

    Indeed it is!

I'll give Mac the ripper a look, cheers!

Its the most straightforward and one of the first out there, should do the trick nicely!

And when using Mac The Ripper, can you reduce the file size to fit a regular single sided 4.5GB DVD?

    I like HandBrake too.

MTR & Handbrake to do my own DVD collection.

I like Handbrake. I used handbrake to put most of my dvd's on my ipod.

    iSquint FTW.

I use MacTheRipper for actually ripping the DVD. I then use Handbrake to converted the DVD info to an .avi file (cuz it's smaller). Then if I want to out it on my iPod I use iSquint to convert it to mp4.

Yeah I just use MTR for ripping and Handbrake or Visual Hub after that, depending on the file size, and how many I want to do in one sitting.

iSquint is my favourite for creating to file sizes for my iPods and schtuff. Presets ftw in Handbrake though:p

Yeah MTR is the best, in fact I've just made my donation to Geezerbuttz. Then it's DVD2onex which does a great compression job for Dual Layer to Single Layer backups. That or Toast maybe.

Toast does a good job of compress to fit onto single layer dvd-rs. I know you have to pay for it but it's not that expensive and is easy to use.

Ive used MTR & DVD2oneX but found that it is very picky about which DVD's it wants to remove the copy protection on and allow you to backup. I have a special edition box set that I want to keep in pristine condition and for some reason using the above software I was able to backup only 3 out of the 5 discs. :-(

Handbrake wont encode to MPEG2 and my DVD player wont play AVI files so thats Handbrake out the window. Has anybody got ideas on why only some of the discs from the box set are causing problems? I heard that new DVD protection causes problems with MTR but why would this only be on 2 of the 5 discs?

    Hi Folks,

Has anybody run into a problem like this before. I would prefer not to have to get a load of PC software just to backup DVD's :-(
