Strange One: Water leaking from nose.

For the past few weeks, almost every time I bend over a clear salty water comes out of my nose. My nose isn't blocked and I have been getting a lot of headaches recently, but that could just be stress.

I mentioned it to the doctor when I was in for something else and he referred me to an ear nose and throat doctor straight away but didn't really say anything. I thought he would just tell me it was nothing and to feck off tbh and was even a little embarrassed bothering to mention it.

While I'm waiting for the appointment I did a little searching on google and got a few scary results that match my symptoms, they describe Cerebrospinal Fluid, Leaks eg:

Anyway I'm after scaring the crap out of myself!:o

These leaks seem to be associated with head trauma but can be spontaneous. I wasn't in any car accidents or anything. I know that I'm most likely just worrying about nothing but would like some reassurence. Would there be any other explanations? Post nasal drip maybe? But I would imagine that would be greeny, mine is clear. Anyone ever experience anything similar?

    Hey imred,

Although I can't give you any medical advice, I can at least offer you some moral support as I have/had been experiencing the exact same thing for a while. It seems to have stopped now but I was worried for a bit...

Again, IANAD, but my symptoms seemed to coincide with having perferrated eardrums (which sucks by the way).. I have convinced myself that water getting into my ears (in the shower, for example) was coming out through my nose!

You say you've had some headaches over the last while? Have you had any pain in your ears?

I, too, was referred to the Ear, Nose & Throat people, but decided to seek another opinion. My doctor prescribed some medication and after a long time the symptoms (nose-leak & ear drum pain) seemed to dissappear. Unfortunately, in my case, the ear problems have a high rate of reoccurance and lately some pain is returning...

I would say: don't freak out! But, get yourself checked out for safetys sake - and if you don't mind, let us know how ya get on ;) I'm sure the EN&T crowd will have dealt with this before...

    Good luck :)

Have you tried taking an anti-histamine? I get this when I get hayfever, it's really annoying!

Thanks ejvilla of course I will keep ye updated. Its just annoying having to wait for this appointment, because its christmas I couldn't get one until the 30th of january. Will probably have stopped leaking by then! As long as its not brain juice I don't mind! I havent really had any ear pain recently but I did have gromits as a kid, maybe they left a hole in there or something, lol:D!

Oh and ps I hope you get your ears sorted out ok, there's nothing more painfull than an earache.

No, wouldn't be blocked! Just runny with like salt water type stuff. Anti histamines cleared it up. Might just be an allergic reaction to something?

Just noticed this thread in passing. You shouldn't jump to conclusions using the internet :D. In the differential diagnosis for this is leakage into the nasal fossa (an air space in the nose) of fluid from the tear (lacrimal) gland through the nasolacrimal duct. In my experience this happens more frequently when the sinuses are inflamed or clogged. This may also explain your headaches.

Do not take this as a diagnosis, as it is not. It is just to lighten your mood a little bit, as this differential is significantly less serious than leakage of cerebrospinal fluid. You still need to see the specialist to be sure to be sure.

I have had similar, really severe headaches, gromits as a child and referred to ENT specialist who couldn't find anything physically wrong (a couple of years ago, said my previous history wasn't relevant after the age of 16...makes no sense to me but..). Could well be an allergy though. I was recomended to cut out dairy products as it builds up as cataarh (sp?) and similar horrible goo. But it might take another couple of weeks or more of excruciating headaches etc. before it clears out of your system...my 2cents!
Pain killers, sudafed and lots of tissues might help!

Ok now the leaking and the headaches have stopped!:) Only thing is I don't know whether I should bother with the ENT now or not! Will probably go anyway but I can see it being a bit of a waste of time and money. They stopped when I was at home for christmas for a few days and havent come back. Maybe I'm allergic to something in college.

I've got a similar problem. This time
last year it happened for the first time & now iv got it again.. Starts with really horrible headaches. Had a headache each day now for the past week & there not your ordinary headache their mainly left sided. Then the nostril leaking is out of my left nostril & its a yellow colour. I get dizzy too & suffer from hazy memory. I went to the doctor last year & he just gave me strong tablets for my headache & said nothinh about the leaking from my nostril so i dont know whether to waste my time & money going again?
    Opinions?
