X1/9 cylinder damage

    Hi All,

Just started restoring an '83 X1/9 and have found some pitting on one cylinder wall. Its about 2/3's up the cylinder, about 1" long,1/4" high. The engine was idle for a long while and this is probably where the piston was stopped. Is this for the scrapheap or possible to repair economically?

    Thanks
    Paul.

I'd say it's a scrapper alright, those engines were finiky at the best of times. As far as I know it's the same as a Ritmo, shouldn't be too hard to find a good one.

Yeah, looks like I'm on the lookout for an engine.....

    1500 X1/9, Ritmo, 128...Uno Turbo even!....anyone?

    Paul.

I wouldn't say they are finiky, they've been used in racing 128/Ritmos and currently Unos for years, rev to 8k, and rarely give trouble.
I buy and sell a few racing cars and should be able to source you a good 1300 engine after Xmas....
When lightened and balanced and with a little bit of head work, they produce over 90bhp and run forever........

stupid question maybe ...but could you not get it honed or lapped by an engine reconditioner ...if there is such a thing in Ireland ?

    Thanks for the replies.
Don't know about honing it out but dropping a good engine in would be a simpler solution.
I've been looking at doing the Uno Turbo install and with the current engine gone, I might just do that.
    Talk after Christmas motormouth.

    Thanks
    Paul.

Get new pistons and cylinders. When doing this, change the bearings and the sealings too and your engine is like new again.
If you dont want to do, bring it to me, i do it :-)

hmmm.....weighing up the options. Typically what would it cost to get the engine repaired, new cylinders, pistons etc?

    Paul.

If the cylinders need to be rebored then I think that the likes of Loftus Farrell or Westward Engineering will charge around 350 euro I think (they'll quote you over the phone). If you bring the stripped down block to them they'll assess the damage and see if you need a hone or rebore. Obviously with a hone you just need new rings and probably bearings, oil pump and gaskets seeing as you've the engine apart. A Fiat specialist (UK) should be able to quote you for pistons if a rebore is necessary. A full rebuild on a Triumph 6 cylinder cost me 2k euro. That included a rebore, a new (expensive) camshaft as well as pistons, bearings, oil pump, gaskets etc using quality components. It also included a head rebuild with unleaded inserts as well as a replacement distributor - the Delco ones can't be tweaked in the same way as the Lucas ones. It also includes the shipping of parts from the UK. I did the strip down/assembly myself so no other labour costs involved. It would have been much cheaper to use a reground cam and cheap bearings and gaskets but it was all worth it - the satisfaction of building your own engine is an added bonus. The companies mentioned above will reassemble your engine for a fee (I think another 350- 400 euro).

I got my engine rebored last summer. Place in clondalkin.150 euros. great job with the correct finish. 350 euros for pistons and rings from supplier in italy. head gasket 80 euros from e-bayer in hungary. My time to assemble......priceless. around 50 hours including head decoke and valve grind. It took considerably longer to get the engine into the car and get it going again, but thats part of the joy of ownership...............PM for contact numbers. if you are serious about a rebuild. I'll give you all the help I can. This is not rocket science, and you can't break it any worse than it is at the moment. There is no sound like the first startup of an engine you have built yourself.
