new novice camera advice

I was thinking of buying a new camera for Christmas i am not sure which one to choose I don’t think I use a camera enough or have enough knollege of photography to go for a SLR but maybe it would be good to a SLR now rather then deside later that I wanted one, anyways heres my options…

I borrowed one of the 6500’s and liked it not sure if the s8000 has the rapid 5 shot function the 6500 has?

or maybe you could recommend something else for me?

Well the 6500 looks more professional
Has a quicker zoom as you can wind it your self
The 8000 all you are really paying for is the 18x zoom
It really depends aht you need it for?
I like the 6500 more Cheaper and by the looks of things better
