    Hey,

I'm thinking of buying my first electric guitar, been playing acoustic for a while now.Was looking at this mexican strat on thomann, seems to be a really good deal. Was just wondering what people thought about mexican fenders in general or if anyone has this guitar or similar and what they thought.

that looks like a nice guitar,i was the same as you playing acoustic for a while and wanted to get an electric.after much debate with myself and wondering about mexican against american i went for the american deluxe strat for 1098 on music store, reason been that i said if i was going to buy a guitar for 500 quid why not spend a few more quid and get the best, you might find yourself saying in six months why dident i spend a little more and get the better one(they hold there value better, they age better and they are nicer to play i dont care what anyone says)dont get me wrong the mexican fenders are not bad(i bought a baja telecaster and its fine)but its like everything, you can go to a cheap clothes shop and buy a pair of jeans for 20 quid and they will do the job but why not spend a little more and get yourself a decent pair.we all bought things cheaper to save money and then realised why dident i just spend a little more and do the job right.look around and you can get a decent used usa fender for about 750,you we thank yourself in a year or two.

Perhaps if one, for example, does not have the extra €598 to spend on "the best"...

I'm afraid I have to disagree with pretty much everything else you've said in you post too. Guitar buying, like fashion, is completely subjective. What you may feel comfortable playing, or what you may think is the "best" is entirely your own opinion. It depends on how you want to use the guitar. Often, a beginner isn't really sure what they want in a guitar so it's better to buy something cheaper to learn the fundamentals on and then upgrade once they have more experience.

Equally, one could argue that this dilema about needing to "spend a little more" in order to "do the job right" could arise no matter what guitar you buy. Perhaps in 6 months time you too will regret buying an American Deluxe Strat instead of a significantly more expensive Custom Shop creation... Just saying.

OP, Mexican Fenders are fine instruments and that particular model would be quite versatile as it has a humbucker in the bridge. They also make great platforms for modding should you feel the need to upgrade later. You might also like to look at some Japanese Fender instruments, if you're sure that's the way you want to go. But I think you should look around, maybe play a few electrics and see what feels right. The Mexican Fenders will still be there for €500 if you do decide to get one later.

What type of music do you want to play anyway? That would make everything a lot easier!

johnboy, I think it was ironic that the title of your post was "lot of snobery with guitars" and you then go on show that exactly. As Ravelleman said, the Mexi Fenders are solid guitars that do the job. Great if you want a workhorse guitar for not too much €€ or a solid base to upgrade.

Anam, I would recommend you get into some shops and try out some mexi strats - see how you like them.
Made in Japan Fenders are excellent value but they all come with vintage (ie small) frets which may or may not suit everyone.

Why not this one for 399?

yes i did sat they was a lot of snobery with guitars, and yes i did say that the guitar he pointed out was a nice guitar, and yes i did say i had a mexican fender and that was a fine guitar.i also said that 'I' went out and bought what i thought was a 'better' guitar in my opionion,i like the finer details that the american version had to offer, and talking to many people about guitars the majority of them said that if you can afford the 'better' version well then go for it.off course its down to personnal choice and what you want from a guitar.i have been playing for about two years now and i have got hooked on it and said to myself that this is for me.i went out and bought the guitar that i wanted,i played many guitars on the road to buying this guitar and am very happy with it.

it depends how cheap you can get them for. they are grand guitars but personally i wouldn't pay more than around €400 for a new one. I just think there are much nice alternatives available for around the same price, although perhaps not as versatile.

having said that though a good mex fender with some TLC and customisation can be turned into a great number. that's what i'd do personally myself, buy one second hand for fairly cheap and use the money saved to sparkle it up.

My boss has one Mexican in his attic for sale. If you want to see and try the guitar, let me know, it could be arranged.
