Feel free to fill us in on how we can survive a full scale nuclear or bio chemical attack? We can't. I bet you were happy when the government wasted millions getting Iodine tablets to everybody, so we could all live that extra few hours as the radiation poured over us.

Jaysus, I haven't a clue where I left them things.

Those tablets are no longer any good to use (if they ever were to start with).

Should I get one of those wind up radios incase of nuclear fallout?

The funniest thing about the link for the NEP is that it spends a whole page telling you that there is a plan,

    what departments/services are involved,
    How will decisions be made,
What type of incidents does the Plan cater for,
How the NEPNA compares to other Emergency Plans,
How is Ireland notified about nuclear incidents abroad,
How soon after notification that could Ireland be affected,
how Ireland could be seriously contaminated by an incident abroad,
How radioactive contamination is detected in Ireland,
How weather would affect the contamination level,
How will the public be informed in an emergency,
if it Will be safe to drink water from the tap,
How often the Plan is tested,

and then dosen't tell you what the f*cking plan is :D

A little nuclear radiation or snmall pox will not force me to suckle from the teet of culchies! I will stay and lose my hair in a dignified fashion while watching Star Trek in my sitting room!

I dumped all those tablets a few months ago, after I found them at the back of the cupboard. They hadn't even sent enough for the whole family - just enough for me and the kids (poor hubby :):))

The only radio transmitter that will work after heavy fallout is likely the original Marconi valve unit that was used for 2FM Mediumwave - 612kHz. Its kept maintained for this reason... so you need a windup radio that does mediumwave. Not sure they exist...

basically, we are all fecked if there is a nucllear fallout, government dont have a clue

    How will decisions be made?

"In the event of a nuclear emergency necessitating the activation of the NEPNA, senior representatives of each of these Departments/ Agencies will meet, in Dublin, as the Emergency Response Coordination Committee (ERCC). The Committee will be chaired by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government and will consider the expert advice provided by the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland and other agencies regarding measures to protect the population. It will remain in session until the crisis has passed."

So what there saying is they will stay in their nuclear leaded reinforced bunkers until the fallout cloud has passed. Then will will repopulate more Mary Harney's and Bertie's during the time....:eek::eek:

An old house might have some in the roof, or maybe you could use some of that lead based paint that might do the trick too.

I suppose there's no use pointing out that there's no real prospect of lethal fall-out getting here from any sort of nuclear plant accident. The iodine tablets were pointless not because they wouldn't work (they do in certain circumstances), but because they wouldn't be needed here.

To get the levels of radioactivity people seem to be envisaging you need a good old fashioned nuclear war, which seems to have gone out of fashion somewhat since the 80's.

As for the National Emergency Plan for Nuclear Accidents, if you read into it, it's actually detailed, clear and fairly comprehensive. There are lots of other emergency plans for other incidents.

There's a new Emergency Services forum in Soc, if anyone is interested in seriously discussing the topic.

Check out the UK's Protect & Survive initiative from the 70s/early 80s:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXx5Y2Fr2bk

"In the event of a nuclear attack, Britain will become a vast and uninhabitable wasteland" - what's the point in giving tips on how to survive so?!

"Following an attack, you may have to remain in your fallout shelter for at least two weeks." I think he meant to say "millennia" but mixed the word up with "weeks".
