aus / nz - about 80 eur day
    us / can - 90 eur day.

this allows for internal travel, food, drink, accom some activs.

Much better to do sth america and interesting parts of asia like laos, vietnam, burma, cambodia where it's far far more interesting and cheaper (30 eur a day). You also get much better accom - guesthouses that are very social but you are not sharing a room with 7 others like in aus/nz which gets old very quickly! Food is also much better as you eat out all the time. In aus/nz, us you'll be eating the cheapest crap out or cooking in a hostel.
It's also completely safe (nothwithstanding that poor Irish guy who perhaps should not have gone trekking on his own in the wilds of Patagonia - that could happen in any country....).

So, how much would that work out over a few months? Put it this way, How far would you get on €5,000?

You wouldn't get too far in america and australia on 5000 euros. 90 days of hostels in the US will cost you at least 1500 euro's. if you are traveling from place to place across the country you can spend around 30-40 on shorter journeys. 60-70 on more expensive ones. More if you get the train or fly. You could easily spend in excess of 600 just moving around. Also America only has hostels in the larger cities. You'd have to rely on more expensive motels.

I think you'd get 3 months out of 5 grand in America/Canada. But that is really budgeting.

As opposed to 5 grand lasting you 6 months in south america and not overly budgeting.

5000 / 180 days (6 months) = 27 a day. If you camp and eat cheap tinned food you will last your 6 months in australia/america/canada. Otherwise you're stretching it

    I have a similar question...

I'm heading away for four months, using hostels etc. How much for 4 months away?

A month in Thailand, a month in Aus/NZ, a month in Fiji/Cook Islands and a month in USA?

    Thanks

can you guys not extrapolate from per day to per month???!!!
(hint multiply number of days per month by cost per day).

As I said, outside your main flight cost you are talking: -

Us / Canada / Oz / Nz : - 80 euro a day eating out. 45-50 living on tinned beans.

Asia / South America: - 30 euro a day. (including eating out)

Eur5000 lasted me just over 4 months in South America , that was covering almost all the continent, a mix of eating out and self catering , a mix of camping/hosteling and LOTS of activities.

Eur1000 per month was enough for 4 months in South East Aisa

Eur1000 per month in South Asia (india , nepal etc )was plenty

Eur500 per month is enough in Africa (without Safaris)

Get a working visa for Aus/NZ and suppliment your funds.

fiji is damn expensive , your talking Eur50 a day
