is there a way of viewing all these programmes
A blue ball/black triangle (depending on your OS X version) under the app icon in the dock indicates that its running.

If you like, you can open the Activity Monitor. Its the Mac equivalent of the Task Manager and will show you which processes are running and how much RAM/CPU each one is hogging. You can find it in the Applications -> Utilities directory.

Also try CMD+ALT+ESC to Force Quit Applications -- sometimes, something an app can hang & be taking up resources without you knowing.

Onyx is pretty good for cleaning/running maintenence scripts etc

    Hi eurotrotter

are all the apps running on startup?
If so you can right click on the apps icon in the dock and choose not to have it run on login.

could also try a permissions repair in disk utility, never hurts to run it, also a little app called applejack is great for repairing permissions and clearing caches as well, it needs to be run from single user mode though, command+s on startup

just trying the disk permissiond there now
i have rogramme running on startup in the activity moniotr called microsoft au domain , but i force quitted it cos its a power pc in kind, tohugh that might be the root cause of the slow dawn and beachball syndrome, but no, not made any difference,
i have ran onyx, dont all teh cache clearouts etc, but stil no good, trying the dsisk permission there now, in disk utility, well see how that goes
has anyone else every expereinced a slow down, i thought macbooks, remain as fast as teh day they wer boughtm forever, once they are maintained well, i.e. cache clear out

    You don't need to

macs dont have a defrag utility but you can select the hdd in disk utility and select erase and the erase free space option, this will essentially clear out the deleted data and tidy up the partition tables.

if none of this works, the next nest option is to do an archive and install using the original media supplied with the machine, this will install a new system and should speed up the machine, also when deleting programmes make sure to dump the respective .plist files or use a programme like appzapper
