just noticed vodafone broadband have changed their unlimited usage policy to a cap of 5gb per month.

could any poker techy tell me how would this affect the poker playing subscriber.

i'm still on dial up but interested in their e30 monthly package if i can play without an end of the month penalty.

it would be practically irrelevant for your poker needs.

5gb is plenty. I played on a 1gb limit for about 30 hours a week without going over. You cant download much(movies, music, pictures) on 1gb but 5gb should be fine. if you just use it for poker you will probably use about 2gb if you play 40 hours a week. may be even less

If you watch alot of stuff on pokertube for example a 5GB limit might become an issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,141 ✭✭✭ocallagh

yeah, an entire episode of HSP on pokertube would be like 200mb or so. just be careful about video.

also, you can try out all 3 mobile broadband operators (3, O2 and Vodafone) for free. I had O2 but had to switch because the connection was terrible. I'm on 3 now which seems fine in my area.

Ah to be fair we are progressing along up there!!! Vodafone and O2 have put a few new sites in up there and Three have decent coverage up there, well where my home is anyway.

You need to be getting good 3G coverage for it to work well. Check with Vodafone themselves to see what kind of 3G coverage they offer in your area. A better idea is to find someone with a 3G phone and see what kind of signal they pick up in the places you will be using the connection alot.

    De-reg ftw

so I got this gizmo anyway.

    E29.99 as new.

just connected ..steady green light so just GPRS as I thought.

seems comparable to utv dial up so far but haven't tried multi tabling yet.:D

how do I check my usage , cant see as yet.

be wary with the 3G broadband modem. My own poker experience is thus:
    Boyle Poker: works grand
    Ladbrokes: grand
    Betfair: very laggy
Titan/Paddy/Green Joker: disconnects every 10 mins or so - nightmare
Sky Poker: won't work at all
    Irish Eyes: Won't work

Throughput and connectivity are two very different things. Here's a useful analogy:
Think of your connection as a big main road.

Throughput (broadband, 5gig caps etc), relates to the number of cars you can get down it at the same time. Broadband is analgous to a 8 lane highway, dialup is a single lane B-road.

Connectivity is the state of that road, you could have an 8 lane highway covered in pot holes or a recently re-tarmaced country road.

You couldnt possibly exceed the 5gig cap of throughput with a poker client, it needs video or lots of audio streaming to make a dent in that. (A picture, particularly a moving picture is worth far more then a thousand words in byte-size....)

Also, connectivity depends greatly on where you are on the internet map and where you are and where you are connecting TO. This is not analogous to physical location, occasionally places like Donegal will will have better connections to outside of Ireland depending on the carrier.

So, the things to consider are:
    1. How stable is this connection for the site I want to use, from where I am. Testing is the only way to answer to this.

    2. How wide is the connection (how much data can I get down it in any one second, not a huge consideration for poker, but it is for everything else).

    DeV.

    cheers Dev, nice analogy.

no probs with any site yet.

found the volume usage.it says duration 20 hrs, but I plugged it in for the first time only 11 hours ago.....consequently the total usage says 750 mb already and I've only played poker with it!!!

  • Business & Finance Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 32,387 Mod ✭✭✭✭DeVore

750mb in 11 hours is about 70 mb an hour. 1 meg a minute (roughly!).

Thats not from poker.... I dont think so anyway! I'll run some tests if you like , how many tables are you playing at a time?

    DeV.

    single tabling that day.

plugged the modem into another computer and it gobbled up another 750mb downloading a poker room and JRE.
normal since so must be the initial plug in gobbles the usage.

just a thought ..is the usage stored in the modem?

mine is 2nd hand so maybe the 1st user used the extra MBs.

have this about two weeks now and quite happy with it.
works away on GPRS four bars and don't notice anything different performance wise when comparing with utv dial-up.

usage for first seven days of January is 550mb for 63 hours.at that rate I should use only 2.435gb. are those figures right?

the big difference is I am more relaxed about connecting all the time I am at the computer.also the land line is freed up for calls or can even be disconnected to save the line rental.:D

I have the Vodafone modem, and as far as I can gather, yes it does store total usage, but you will be billed only for volume used in each billing period.
