I have a lot of .mkv files on my laptop and would like to be able to play them wirelessly from the laptop to the PS3. Would this be possible or would I need to reconvert them to another file format? If so is there one where I can keep the 720 vertical line resolution so it will play back in HD?

They will have to be transcoded or converted to mp4 format.

I use TVersity for this. Installed it on my pc upstairs, pointed the software at my shared folders of vids, etc. Then it appeared on my PS3s screen automagically! :-)

Many of my files are in formats PS3 currently can't handle (avi mkv etc...), but tversity transcodes them transparently, so they play fine on my screen downstairs with the ps3 attached.

Thanks for this, this works fairly well, the only thing is that it scales down the HD .mkv files, but a really nice application.

Yeah from what I've found, u need to either convert the "container" from mkv to mp4. However mp4 doesn't support 5.1 sound so what you'll be left with is amazing 1080p picture and only stereo sound!!

Otherwise you can change it to a vob file. Google mkv2vob. You'll then get the 5.1 sound. As far as i know tho it only works on 720p.

All these processes should only take minutes rather than hours cos your not actually re-encoding the file but trans-coding it.

Or you could also use divx/xvid/wmv thanks to today's update

Mkv's usually contain the x.264 video codec and ac3 for sound so all the above won't work with them. The codecs supported with the new update are only used for SD and not HD.
