Different Jobs

    Hi All,

So I've decided to be a pilot. Its easier said then done, but where there's a will there's a way. It should cost over 100k to get my license and what not, and in order to get that (or near enough that) I'm gonna have to work extremely hard. I was thinking of getting a job on an oil rig as its very well payed, its different too so I can see some of the world.

Any suggestions of well paying jobs that don't require a degree (or experience)?I remember last year there was an ad in the Independent for car salesmen - in Iraq!

Also, has anyone got any experience working on something like an Oil Rig (or car sales man in Iraq) As I'd love to hear from you.

    Cheers

Not the best time of year, but perhaps look at some jobs in the industry - cabin crew, ground handling, etc. Not the best paid jobs in the world but some valuable experience.

I was thinking that too, but that catch seems too deadly for me!

Does your solution have to be so extreme? Fair play to you if you can manage it, but it seems a bit wacky...

No; per se. I know I can work for a few years and make up the money (or most of it) but I guess I'm looking for a quicker work to reward ratio. Also, most of those "wacky" jobs are the best paying. I really wouldn't mind having to go off to some far place to get cash, not just for the money - but for the experience. I've come to the realisation that I've only got one life, and its up to me to life it the way I want to - if that means living for a year off the coast of Africa on an Oil Rig then so be it.

But again, if you have a suggestion that isn't as extreme I'd be more then happy to consider it.

    cheers.

    Are you an engineer?
I've heard there's good money on an oil rig but it's not a job that just anyone can go for.

Suggestion, the lotto is heading for €11 million next week ;)

Probably a personal question, but what age are you because the airlines hire into mid thirties and above so if you are early twenties then there is plenty of time to save up. In the same boat myself and should have enough in just under 2 years. :D

before you do a thing , get a class 1 medical, it's what the IAA recommend,

you may not be medically able to be a commercial pilot, so have the health check done first and save yourselfa lot of hassle.

Also , think of taking out just 8 grand , and heading to Australia for two months for your ppl , it's what I did and worked out very cheap

This gave me an understanding of what is ahead in becoming a pilot....

    good luck

    Hi All,

I'm in my mid 20's too, so I realise its not too pressing but the earlier the better.
Thats a good idea about going to Oz for the PPL, does that affect me getting a JAA ATPL? If it doesn't I think your onto a winner.

I know this all hinges on a class 1 medical too, and I wouldn't be in any position to take out any money unless I passed it - the only area I'd be concerned with would be my hearing - its not perfect but I'm not tone deaf - I have a hearing test this week just to see if I'd pass the class 1 with this level of hearing - don't wanna pay 600 quid just to be told my hearings not good enough.

I'm fairly confident I'll pass it though.

Nice one for all the ideas, keep them coming!

well don't stress too much about your hearing, pilots wear glasses and I sure there are a few old cobblers with digital hearing aids too.

As for your JAA , the best people to seek advice from is of course the IAA (they havea terrible website but it does have their contact details)

It's caused no problem for me , but I do have to submit some forms now to get my Irish licence, some forms and 80 euro , but this pales with what I saved by going to Australia.

I went to basair.com.au who are of extremley high standards , based in Bankstown airport,Sydney. easy to get to and it's more fun flying in blue skies I find.

Pm if you need more info , and defo get hooked up with a flight sim as they are good for practising your routines and to get a general feel for what instruments are and where they are located !!

    good luck..
