just went to log into my gmail, and after entering my password wrong (used one for another site by accident), re entered the password i knew to be correct, and i was then asked to type the distoreted word that i could see on the screen

now i've often done this request when signing up to a site or if trying to retreve my password, but never when entering details wrong on the log-in screen for a site already signed to

has anyone seen this on gmail before, is this new feature from them, or is a hoax

That shows up when you enter the 'forgot password' screen but not sure if it happens any other time. Maybe it happened because you cleared the cookies so the site doesn't recognise the computer any more or something?

They've been doing that for quite a while.

Funny though, if you just ignore the captcha (not fond of that word) and type your password, it lets you in anyway.

    Weirdness.

    Methinks it's OK.

thing is, i'm not in the forget password screen, and its not letting me ignore it, the fact i have entered my password wrong before and never been promted to do this, am wary if its genuine

Yes, it's genuine. Here's an easy way to check: examine the SSL cert.

How/why would it be a hoax?

Type in the Google URL. If it still happens, it's not likely that your are being spoofed or redirected.

I wouldn't count on it - DNS redirection is getting very common. Fruit Lover's advice of checking the SSL cert details is safer.
