    Folks,
My SkyHD box decided it's had enough tonight, no lights nothing, dead as a doornail. It's out of warranty with Sky, so it's repair or a new one. Any options on either? Sky offered me one for €449 - dont fancy that much. Any recomendations for someone to repair my now broken HD box?

    Thanks,
    Tom

You could try Pacelink in Kesh.

How long did your €449 piece of electronic equipment last before it failed? Sounds like it wasn't fit for it's purpose and you may be entitled to repair courtesy of SKY.

Exactly... warranty is in ADDITION to your consumer rights!! And they take precedent over any warranty offered by any company in Europe. If sky will not play ball, small claims court is €15, much cheaper than a new box.

18months old - I'd expect it to last longer alright, but surely I havent got much to stand on?

Any of the retailers doing these? Thought I could pick up a new one in Power City, but doesnt seem so!

You've a right to a unit being fit for the purpose for which it was sold, this means that you could in theory win a small claims court case up to ten years after purchase on, say, a fridge motor going. 18 months is not a reasonable lifespan for an expensive STB, and other manufacturers recognise this (I've had JVC replace an out of warranty unit as the failure should not have happened that early).

it could be a simple case of replacing a few capacitors..

mine blew long after warrenty was over.. opened it up.. found a few capacitors had blown, replaced them and everything is working fine if not better than before :D

I'm surprised at this as I've seen numerous threads on A/v Forums where dead HD boxes out of warranty have neen replaced by SKY with refurbished boxes for less than £100

Is Kesh Electrics still open? Went through the village last weekend and their building is empty looking, and has been up for sale for the past couple of months.

It always looked closed even years ago; but I've no idea if it is still open or not.

Kesh in generally looks fairly closed up :D

I pulled out the power supply over the weekend, one of the capacitors defintley looks blown, and keeps blowing the fuse if I change it. I've ordered a new Power Supply from satcure for about £20. Will see how I get on with that, otherwise I'll give Sky another earful and see if I can get anything else out of them.
