Pat Kenny should go and concentrate on his radio show. That Jerry SeinFIELD debacle was the last straw. He has a whole team of researchers under him who work very hard to bring the show together and then he can't even bother to do a small bit of research himself, ie getting the guest's name right. Why are RTE so afraid to replace him? They would probably save a lot of money. Are they afraid he will go to TV3? No loss. What are they going to do with him? Maybe he could model speedos on Exposé

aw colm and jim jim would be brilliant!

oh i walked right into that one

but i thought it was Seinfield PRONOUNCED Seinfeld so i would have done ok if i was pat kenny.

(cant believe i just used the words "if i was pat kenny" in a sentence...)

Seriously though, he gets paid a scandalous amount. Wish RTE would develop some new talent instead of giving people like him jobs for life. At least Jonathan Ross is good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,063 ✭✭✭ParkRunner

You can be guaranteed that he will have someone affiliated with RTE on at least once every 2 weeks, they don't even try anymore. Maybe Matt Cooper should take over? Or Russell Brand, he'd be interesting

The pool of guests is extremely limited, but when the presenter is a big plastic turd then they are fighting a losing battle

Dara O'Brien would ber very good IMO would make it a bit more like Jonathon Ross though i.e more comedy orientated

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,358 ✭✭✭Dennis the Stone

If they had Bosco presenting, totally serious, just him in his box interviewing serious guests and debating topics like abortions etc. it would be so surreal

Actually, after looking at that thread title again, let me change my answer to tapeworms

Podge and rodge should get it, would stop the pandering to guests and make the roasary brigade weep. Great nights abuse guaranteed. Bring Fun fun fun to a shockingly boring Friday night.

dara o brien is dara o briens biggest fan, dont like the guy , what i call a corporate comedian , too ambitious, not as much of a corporate comedian as patrick kielty all the same

Podge and Rodge lol. They should return to their slot of Bedtime Scare, their show is getting old, fast

What you need is someone who has the charisma and charm of Parkinson. Then you've got a winner. (Also he can have a good laugh)

And Terry Wogan, doubht that will happen, I think he's comfortable with his radio slot.

Irish television is soooo crap, And yet if you look at some of the top guys in the bbc and channel 4 past and present are Irish....

Where exactly is our tv licence money going> Or are Rte to afraid to make an effort and put something on that people will actually enjoy...

Is Pat due to be replaces ? :D

Or is this just meaningless speculation ? :(

I posted this thread after seeing the novelty bet on paddy power. I am not aware of pat being replaced(unfortunately).

I just thought that the complete lack of talent to replace him would make a good discussion..............

"Must Happen by 31st Dec'2007 or bets will be Void"

Eh, I don't see the point in this market. Not gonna happen.

I don't think a comedian would be the best replacement, especially given the history of the Late Late. What most people are proud of the show for is the issues its tackled and the way it changed the country. I don't think the decline in the show is totally down to Pat, I feel the producers have ruined it. Hard hitting debates are few and far between now and the light entertainment pieces have taken over. Even Kenny Live had a fairly decent balance of serious and ents.

I don't think the replacement should be Tubridy either, he's far too scripted. He never lets the guest just talk and far too often stops guests if they start answering a lined up question because he cannot deviate.

You need a host that would give themselves to the show and not want to be the star and unfortunately RTÉ doesn't breed that anymore. Their current line up of presenters are all spoon fed wannabes who wouldn't be able to hand a show over to a guest or an issue. Miriam O'Callaghan would have the best credentials but her voice upsets me so I couldn't vote for her.

Perhaps not the Late Late (yet) but I'd like to see Orla Barry from Newstalk do a talk show. She's one of the few presenters who rarely turns it into a piece about her (unlike Ray D'Arcy) and she actually listens and works an interview. She could perhaps be slightly too Mammyish though.

Yes Wheels, some good points. Not a comedian's role, and never will be.

Pat does not have long left, not least as he has said in the past he wants to retire roundabout 60. It's his 60th birthday in six weeks. However, he's likely to do at least season 2008-2009 - a good indicator is the investment made in the new set a few months ago in September. This would not be done without at least two season's future use in mind. Any new presenter will be launched with a new presentation package. So it's safe to take it that he'll be with us until at least mid-2009.

It is also equally safe to accept that there's only two people remotely capable - and indeed suitable in the eyes of RTÉ - of filling his shoes: Ryan Tubridy and Miriam O'Callaghan. They're on equal terms in regards of mass appeal, target demographic, and competency in dealing with a variety of issues. Where they differ is in relation to status in the light entertainment arena, where Tubridy clearly has the upper hand. Essentially he has 'earned' the right to present the Late Late, in much the way that Pat did with Kenny Live. This is reflected in the better odds for Tubridy with Paddy Power. Nonetheless Miriam has the upper hand as regards heavy-hitting issues and breadth of current affairs knowledge.

As such, it is an exceptionally tough call to determine who will win the day. If Miriam manages to win numbers in her next summer show, it is just about conceivable she will be the next host. It all depends if the out-moded practice of 'earning' a position in the organisation still exists. If it doesn't, it's 50-50.

    All other contenders are out.

It'll probably end up being Ryan Turdbuddy.

if I don't get the Ah mod job, I'll be happy to give this a shot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,330 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

it'll probably be Tubridy - he's got the Saturday night slot that Kenny used to have.

But Kenny's probably got another 5 years, plenty of time for Tubridy's star to wane. Also plenty of time for Kenny to deplete the Late Late's audience sufficiently for RTE to consider finally cancelling it...

Probably Winer, Fire & Snow. She's only done two albums since winning the damn thing and if she's not singing (badly) The Voice she'll roll one of the other few she does out. Isn't she married to the head of Television in RTÉ?
