Apologies if this has been posted already, have searched.

Download Tom Waits’ ‘Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis’ from iTunes or eircom.net and make it number one in Ireland this Christmas.

    Willdo. What's your creditcard details?

Tom Waits is a legend, why any fan would want to spoil that by making him Christmas No.1 is beyond me.

The idea has a nice anti-Christmas appeal to me but I have to agree with the other poster... Tom is too cool. Sorry...

    Spam(ish).

Also, all mastercards start with a 5.

No Spam involved. I've no connection to any music retailer or to the guy who started this, just thought it was cool and posted it.

Thanks, I'll get on to the bank to see what's wrong with mine.

Surely it belongs in the music forum though?

I'm the guy who started it - thanks to jimogr for posting about it (something I was going to do myself early next week).

Not sure how it's spam - the only people that are going to profit from this are the online music outlets and perhaps Waits and his label. If a mod thinks it is that's fair enough - no complaints.

I also don't know how you could think anyone too cool to be Christmas number 1... wouldn't it be even cooler to see Waits beat Westlife and X-Factor hands down? How does being in the charts make an artist any less good?

Anyway - it's all a bit of fun really, nothing else. If people are up for it I'd appreciate them spending their €1 to try and make it happen. If they're not, oh well!

I bought my track on eircom, do they have any kind of chart detailing the current most popular downloaded songs? Will be interesting to see if this gains any momentum.

You simply won't beat the hype of dumb little kids. The music industry > you.

Gonna stick on Rain Dogs now though ^_^ "independant as a hog on ice!boom boom"

If it got into the top 40 though, job done.

Their chart seems to only list Irish artists.

I love the idea. Wasn't there something similar a few years back? Though I can't remember the artist, the song, what position it charted at or if it even happened.

I don't think they do... the only indication I've seen is on iTunes where the song's popularity is way ahead of the rest of that particular album's tracks... not sure if it was before though.

Also iTunes have a 'popular songs' section but it doesn't seem to be updated daily - maybe once or twice a week.

Christmas singles sell in far greater numbers than on normal weeks, but the numbers are still quite low to get top 10 - even relatively low for number 1. I don't know the exact numbers but Leona Lewis sold well under 20k singles to get to number 1 last Christmas. The population of Leitrim could out-do that on their own... while the population of Boards.ie would absolutely destroy it!

Well it's only since early 2007 that you could get a song into the Irish charts based on downloads alone. That said I know Ray Foley had a campaign to get Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" back into the charts while there's a campaign in the UK to get Malcom Middleton's "We're all gonna die" into the charts there.
