waiting on the nite tram to head home rather than go to Coppers :-/
Waiting at Stevens Green > Milltown.

Anyway, I buy my ticket and wait for the next tram; time being around the 1am mark. Get this horrible stench of puke but ignore cos you get used to it after doing college ;)

Go wait by the railing after the ticket booth and I see a guy slumped over behind the ticket area at the railing with a pile of puke a couple of feet away. At the time I wasn't overly interested as he was upright and looked like he was sleeping it off.

People were coming around behind the ticket area and passing him by but having to turn to pass him and at one stage someone hit against him and his knees buckled so he ended up on the ground.

he managed to pull himself up and started to drag himself along by the railing. Didn't last too long and he fell to the ground. At this stage he's about 5 feet away from me and a fuck load of people have bypassed him and tried to sidestep the puke beside him just to get by.

Enough was enough and I go and try tend to the guy. I dunno why, maybe it's cos Wed night myself and rmacm were heading back to milltown and encountered a guy asleep in a grass patch at 1.30am to which we really couldn't leave him, anything could be wrong or have happened.

I had to ask people to not come up past this guy cos I was trying to help him but the ignorant fuckers kept waltzing on by both him and me.
Not a single person tried to help.

Seriously, if any of you boardsies were one of those people tonight, fuck you and your family, ignorant fucks. Other than the luas I'd spent the last 30 mins waiting on turned up I'd have stayed with him.

I guess one of the guys with CIE got in contact with the guards cos as the doors closed 3 guards were tending to him.

I'm seriously pissed off with the general public. Fuckers.

So after your great intervention, you left him there? Did you help him up or just go over and look concerned for a while?! Sounds like you thought he wasn't that bad that he needed you to stay, probably what alot of other people thought.

If i was in the same situation, alot of it depends on the circumstances. E.g. I'd try to help if the person was unconscious or in genuine distress, but i've seen plenty of drunks (from hobo to student) getting sick/falling over/sitting down quite nonchalantly!

But your right in that the general public are apathetic to those in need.

If I stopped to help everyone in that condition in town I'd never get home. It's his own fault for getting so drunk so maybe waking up at 5am on the pavement freezing cold will be a good lesson for him. The only person I'd help would be a younger female who could be taken advantage of.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,396 ✭✭✭✭kaimera

I genuinely tried to help him, try get him talking, try get him on his feet. I've seen my fare share of drunks and tbqh I don't know why I tried to help this particular guy tonight.

I'm not trying to make myself out as some samaratin or crap, I tried to help alone; it's more about my disgust at the gp than anything else.

Harsh on the family members? No. imo everyone that walked by both of us after I asked them not to is deserving of iy

So that apply's to you and your family, every other nite of the year?

i tried to help a drunk fella a few years ago, he had fallen over and had a nasty cut to his head. I asked him if he wanted me to call him an ambulance or anything and the bastard spat in my face., I say, they got into that state by themselves let them Fuk off and dig themselves out of it. I know it sounds mean but i know my limit when im on the tiles and they should know when to call it a night aswell,.
as someone else said though, if it was a young girl or anything id have to help her, you'd feel sick if you later found out something had happened to her.,

    I don't get it

He was drunk? He shouldn't get himself into that sh1t state.

    I'd have sympathy if:

a: he is dieing of some disease that is making him puke his lung up.
b: Someone spiked his drink with something
c: perhaps if he is a complete youth and it's probably a once off
    etc.

But if it's self induced and he ought to know better, then why the fúck should I come to his puke ridden aid?! I don't know him? He drank too much, he drank beyond what he is capable of drinking without puking a lung up up. He likely knows his limits and ignored them.

And it's likely not the first or the last time either.

I recently read that a large percentage (didn't note the figures) of hospital's time are taken up by people overdoing it like this guy, and it's a huge burden on hospital's time, for something that should be for the most part avoidable.

You'd swear the guy had been mugged or knocked down by a car the way you tell it!

If he was in danger I'd call the police.
And I'd think what a fúcking drain he is on tax payers money.

Is it that easy to tell if someone's drink has been spiked at first glance of their behaviour?

    I didn't claim it was.

I said I'd have sympathy if that were the case.

OP when you say a drunk do you mean someone coming from Coppers or somewhere in a ridiculous state or a homeless drunk? If it's the former i'd always try help. On an idealogical level i'd like to think i'd help the homeless drunk too but on a practical level i wouldnt risk it.

Anyway if it's just someone hammered and puking their ring up i'd always try get them a cab. Remember about 4 or 5 years ago when i was in UCD someone asleep outside the library, i heard plenty of people passed by him probably had a laugh at how drunk he was. Died of hypothermia. Anyway i agree with you OP it irritates me greatly too. Helping your fellow man/woman seems to be a thing of the past. Wouldnt kill anyone to give 2 mins to try get him in a cab.

I made my dad a cup of tea today. I mean, I dont know why I did it...something came over me.

My mam and brother just walked by while he was sitting at the table. My mam made herself a cut of tea. Can you believe that ? She didnt even offer him one. He looked so hurt.

I went over and did my best (Im not great at making tea) but he said it was a really nice cup.

All of you boards.ie people were probably up here posting away while I was trying to do something nice. f-u-c-k all of you and your families.

'fúck you and your family' is the new 'Thanks for logging in, Bossarky', which was the new 'Atari Jaguar'.

Fúck you too buddy. I'm getting sick of the drink problem in this city and presuming the fella was staggering there in his own puke as a result of the Xmas 'festivities' then I've no sympathy for him whatsoever.

I experienced all this on Wednesday night. I drank a lot more than I should have and got pickpocketed in town. I made a thread about it there somewhere. I got my gear back after chasing the fella for about 3 streets but if I had lost it (or worse got stabbed / mugged etc) I'd have had no one but myself (thanks to our beloved national past-time) to blame.

The problem may be that some people genuinely are in difficulty (sick, dying, had a drink spiked etc) but people assume they are drunk or on drugs and just walk on by.

I have to say that if there is a cute young lady getting sick there will be a flock of people over to help her, but if it is some dirty old man or a junkie, no one wants to be the hero. I'm not saying whether this is right or wrong, but it seems that's how it is.

some people "may" really be spiked or whatever but we all know the vast majority of cases is just irrisponsible drinking. as for the cute young lady, i agree, i would help her, because if she stumbled away and ended up passing out in a lane somewhere, shes at a far higher risk of being raped or god knows what than some bloke who might loose a few quid or jewelery. i know the girl would have got herself into the state but if she got attacked by some sicko it wouldnt really be fair to say "well its your own fault for drinking so much.,"
