Second Hand Mileage - How much is too much?

    Right folks! - Question time!

If you were buying a second hand car, how much mileage would you consider acceptable? Would it depend on whether you were buying a diesel or petrol car? Would it depend on whether you were buying a higher spec car (BMW, Merc, Jag, Porsche, etc, etc) as compared to a more basic car?

For example, say you were buying a 3 year old XXXX. How much is too much?

    Any thoughts welcome!!

How long is a piece of rope? It really depends.....
A diesel should be good for well over 250k- whereas a second hand petrol with 100k on the clock is normally a worthless piece of junk, regardless of the make or model. Thats one hell of a generalisation, but it tends to hold.

The average annual mileage might be a better measure- a 20 year old car that was only ever used to deliver the kids to and from school- will have a lot more life left in it than a much younger car that has been used extensively as a taxi.

A car that has had the hell driven out of it- also wouldn't tend to be a good buy either (which is why old folk selling Honda Civics tend to have such receptive audiences for their cars- but the subsequent resale market can be ropey).

    Caveat emptor.

mileage isn't important , just try to get a motorway car because when you start and s top all the time you kill the engine...

high end cars engines are good for 150-250 miles pre re-build.

electronics are the only real concern you should worry about.
