I have a midi compatible keyboard. I'm just wondering what exactly that means. I know it has something to do with hooking your keyboard up to a computer and being able to play samples but i'm not even sure that's right. can anyone give me any more info about this? what it does? how it works? what equipment do i need to hook the keyboard up to a computer?

I'm pretty clueless about the whole thing:o

midi enabled software and hardware can now communicate, like for example you can assign different samples to different notes on your keyboard, so whatever samples at that note will sound when its pressed, you can send different information to each, from C-2 to G8... 128 notes

midi > USB cable will work...

    MIDI rocks

Do I need to get an audio interface or anything like that?

Do the sounds that I assign to particular notes have to be in a certain format?

well u can jus plug the keyboard into the comp via usb ya know, ur soundcards in the comp... midi > USB cable, ive one here, works fine, my keyboard is hooked straight up into reason or fruity loops and works aok

well any musical file format i guess, .mid, .wav .aiff .mp3 etc...

once it has midi in and out ur fine really, theres lots of benifits of it

MIDI - Musical Instrument Digital Interface.

To connect MIDI to your computer, you will need a MIDI interface which essentially converts the 5-pin MIDI in/out to USB. A lot of more recent keyboards come with USB connections in addition to MIDI in/out/thru.

    Something like this.

You don't necessarily need a MIDI cable - check if the keyboard has a USB port, if it does then you don't need a physical MIDI cable. If it doesn't have USB you'll need a MIDI interface or an audio interface with MIDI. Then install some sequencing software, some free virtual instrument plugins and you're flying. There's a whole sticky in the Recording/Mixing/Pro Audio forum about this: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055035319
