    Unsure where to post this

My PC dvd player is DVD±RW (+R double layer) . Does that mean it can use all disks? I ask because the book says using wrong disk could ruin pC

Books say a lot of things...I doubt putting the wrong type of disk in the drive would cause any damage, it just wouldn't let you burn the cd/dvd.
From the description you give it looks like all you can use are +R (Single and Dual layer) DVD Disc's and not -R DVD Discs.

I was abe to use a dvd-r to create a restore disk, in fact I was specifically instructed to. Maybe that is different

i'd imagine they mean to say using them odd shaped discs you know the love-heart ones etc. may ruin the drive, your pc should stay fine.

Maybe you can use both +/- discs then but only +R Dual Layers Discs...tis hard to decipher alright from the drives description but if it burnt a -R disc then you should be able to use both.

MAT****A DVD - RAM UJ870QJ ATA Device is the drive and yes it does +/- as far as I can see. I created restore disks on a dvd-r and burnt some backup programs to dvd+rw

By the sounds of it your drive will burn to +R, -R, +RW, -RW, +R DL and Dvd-Ram disks. It probably doesn't take -R DL disks.

Putting in a disk that is not compatible with it will not break the computer. If it is a suction drive, then putting in an odd shaped disk (like the love heart shaped one cremo says) may screw it up.

    Moved to comp and tech.

Think so I had to use 2 disks to create restores but with R DL -dual layer?- it was only one. Why is the copying of a file to dvd called burning when it is not called burning to copy to a floppy?

    Thanks for the feedback guys

A dual layer disk is like two dvds on top of each other. It holds around twice as much as a standard dvd.
