One Electronic-Book = How Many Saved Trees !?

    Greetings, Friends

Please excuse my unannounced presence. I would have gone through
the expected introductory channel, but I urgently need your insights on
    a personal endeavor.

I'm currently engaged in an initiative to prioritize electronic books
within the publishing industry. The idea is to lessen dependency
on an already fragile environment. My area of focus is chess
publishing, which industry I understand best.

I would greatly value your opinions on:

    (1) The viability of the scheme as a whole
    (2) The unintended consequences attached to it.
For instance, it just might lead to a pile up of
    non-biodegradable reading gadgets, owing to
    evolving technology.

Thank you all, have a good day and a better tomorrow.

I doubt if electronic books will take over he market but an interesting technology would be printing on demand at the local bookshop, this would save all the inventory/space/freight costs and would allow local bookshops to spring up again.

Do electronic books really save trees? I'm unconvinced. I'd imagine that most reputable printers nowadays use paper that's produced from wood from sustainable forests. I was wondering if you have any information that shows otherwise?

E-books can save energy through, mainly through the reduced production, distribution and warehousing effort. However that saving needs to be balanced against the electrical energy required to read them, not to mention all of the local printing that the reader of the e-book finds necessary to do.

Thanks for the response maniac101. I do intend to engage you more fully on the points you raise, but for now, please take a look at:

The article is somewhat limited in scope but I hope you find it revealing. Till next time.

    Hey, Silverharp

Thanks for your thought provoking response. Since you bring up on demand publishing,
I'd appreciate your feedback on similar projects of mine:

    http://actinginfilm.blogspot.com/
    http://thecollegewritersreference.blogspot.com/
    http://dictionaryofscientificliteracy.blogspot.com/

The idea behind them is to variously use blogs as agents of on demand publishing.

    Till next time.

    Have a great day.

I view books as a carbon sink and they promote renewable forestry.
You don't need any energy source to read them most of the time.
