as far as i was told, they just dont need any cadets! sure last year they got something like 280 applications and took in 3 or was it 5, ah i cant remember

pretty sure they took in 3. they dont need any pilots as they have a surplus at present.

well thats what i was thinkin! taking on 3 or 4 a year adds up to quite alot when you consider that the Air Corps/ Army isn't the biggest!!

The last annual report (for 2006) stated there were 55 cadetships awarded in that year with a total of 10 for the aircorps. There were 258 applications, 97 who passed the preliminary interview, 47 got a final interview of which 10 got picked.

In the same order it was 710, 242, 158 and a total of 35 for the army,

    117, 36, 34 and 10 for the naval service.

All that info is in the annual reports. they release them in thefirst quarter of every year for the previous year. So at the start of 08 the full breakdown for 07 will be available.

so did that rumour of them not recruiting for 10 years turn out to be true or false?also whats the story with cadets versus privates going into the aircorps.Would the cadets get more of a chance to fly than the privates?HOw much flying do they actually do a week say?

I amazed at the lowish numbers applying. Remember that there would be many crossovers, people applying for all three services and a considerable number of Walter Mittys. Certainly when I applied back in the eighties, there was talk of several thousand applications. Better odds of getting in nowdays but still a bit of a lottery unless you very much meet the criteria. Looking at that by defintion the Air Corps should be the best of the best, to quote some movie?? I imagine the failure rate adjusts that still further.

Remmy, Cadets are future officers and pilots. Enlisted personnel do fly but only as crew or joyriding. A friend who was a signaller got to fly in every Air Corps type in the fleet. He even got a bit of hands on flying because he was a civilian pilot.

Air Corps pilots I know, have complained about how little flying the do sometimes. A civilian flight instructor gets a lot more time than military.

In fact I remember once officer complaining that a Flight Sergeant had more hours than him. The situation has occured where an Air Corps officer has joined Ryanair or whatever and found one of his Captains was one of his former NCOs and now effectively outranked him;)

Something to bear in mind for those of you thinking of joining the Air Corps. Just because you don't get the cadets, it's not the end of the world. Quite a few enlisted personnel got their CPLs while serving in the Air Corps.
