    The whole film was disappointing.

    The whole film was disappointing.

Yeah, agreed. It went downhill very quickly from that, admittedly exquisite, opening shot.

I really like the movie. Cant really explain why...and can understand why someone would dislike it.

One of my favourite films. But it either touches a cord with you or it doesn't.

I always kinda figured he said something like that. But people made too big a deal out of the whisper. Coppola just intended it as a private moment between them.

Surely the whole point of that scene was that you weren't supposed to know what he whispered. If you were it would have been audible.

Anyway, one of my favourite films. I love the closing shots to the Jesus and Mary Chain.

I thought it was going to be along the lines of:

"I'm not really that old, my hair turned grey when I was 10, ok?"

I always assumed it would be "I AM YOUR FATHER" or something equally off the wall.

funnily enough, i agree with you both. Ive often wondered what it is i like about the film as in why does it appeal to me?

My only theory is that its a film you either relate to or not. I have spent time in foreign cultures and found social refuge in the strangest of ways. However not everyone is like me.

Either way i like the film and i think the fact that we dont know what he whispers is what is perfect about the ending. we dont need to know what he says because its irrelevent to the viewer. Its only relevent to both characters in a way that only they could understand. IMO of course!

I have to be leaving.. but I wont let that come between us, OK?

I spoiler'ed it because it is quite disappointing and it will save those who don't want to know what he says.

I don't think it's just a question of relating to the situation. I could relate to the situation in many ways, and yet I just found the whole thing a little up it's own arse and lacking in any real substance.

It's a fantastic film.. not one of my favourites but the performances are top-notch and their relationship is very believable (not easy to do given the age difference).

And it's very funny too.. especially the cultural humour with Japan. Like when Bob gets into the shower and switches it on, it's down below his neck-line (playing on the average height of people there).

It was a film i loved.. but my girlfriend loathed it - it's a real love-it-or-hate-it type of film from opinions of various friends. There's very little middle-ground.

I'm a middle-grounder! I liked it overall, I could relate to the dislocation but I found some of the jokes about Japan irritating and silly and I thought they made the American characters seem unsophisticated.

As for that clip, as others have said, what was actually said doesn't really matter.

especially the cultural humour with Japan

I don't want to come across as a know-it-all snob, but I found the cultural humour to be the weakest part of the film, in my opinion. The film is often commended for capturing what Japan is like for a foreigner, but I found the cultural humour to be very bottom-of-the-barrel, with sweeping generalisations and plain untrue stereotypes.

I always thought he said "Remember back when I was funny? Give me a kiss and I promise I'll make Stripes 2".

Here you go, maybe this'll work its embedded in this site

I came across it by accident & thought i must post it, but Shane you beat me to it :p Well at least someone might/ will see it.

I thought it was one of his more better films, but then again most of them are, pity they're underrated by some like What About Bob? Rushmore etc.

Rushmore btw was only released in some cinemas, i saw it in Screen Cinema in D'olier St. Sorry for going off topic there.

I went to the cinema with 3 others & only 2 liked it as they didnt understand his comic abilities.

Hmmm, yes. But everyone likes to over analyse everything nowadays.

I always hoped he was quietly singing the theme song to Ghostbusters.....

That's basically my opinion of the movie in a nut shell.

Not Sofia Coppola anyway. All her films are as good as her acting in GF3.

I enjoy it, wouldnt call it an absolutely amazing film though.

My girlfriend hates it though - claims the only reason I like it is Scarlett Johannson in her underwear in it.

    ...might not be far off.

It is an amazing film because it is an experience. When you watch it you are there with them. I also think it has a dream-like quality to it, it's just perfect. The music is unbelievably fitting and the humour is great.
I've seen it about 10 times and I don't get tired watching it because it doesn't feel like a film, it feels more like a video tape of the best experience of your life, so you can watch it over and over again and never get tired of it.
