Kids paint a bright future with Dublin Bus
    6th November 2007

Thirty five pieces of colourful paintings and lyrical poetry will be on display for the first time this week until the 8th September at Dublin City Library on Pearse Street, Dublin 2 as part of the 2007 Schools’ Art Competition by Dublin Bus.

The pieces created by primary school children from 38 schools across Dublin are the culmination of the annual art competition run by Dublin Bus to promote the value of the public transport service to people in their local communities and to create awareness of the negative impact of vandalism on buses. The winners will have their paintings and poems featured in over 10,000 Dublin Bus 2008 Calendars which are available free of charge.

The Schools’ Art Competition began in 2002 with a pilot programme in Darndale. Since then it has been expanded throughout Dublin and has contributed to a reduction in vandalism on buses by 20% in the last 2 years. Each of the Dublin Bus depots have a full time school coordinator who visits schools based within the individual catchment areas relaying the message to young people how to use and respect public transport in their respective areas.

Joe Meagher, Chief Executive of Dublin Bus said at the opening of the exhibition: “The calendar and art exhibition illustrates the special relationship that Dublin Bus has developed with local communities and the people the company serves. It encourages children to develop their artistic skills while having fun at the same time as being educated about the benefits of public transport to people in their area and its benefit to the environment”.

Dublin Bus carries over 150 million passengers annually and on average 500,000 each day across its 214 routes in the Greater Dublin Area. The company employs 3,500 staff and is the largest public transport provider in the Greater Dublin Area. Its extensive network, which is serviced through its seven bus depots, provides a range of bus routes including radial, cross-city, peripheral, airport services, Nitelink and sightseeing tours.
