Opened first DSLR ever, and something is shaking inside :(

    Hi everyone,

I have a slight problem. I bought my first ever DSLR this evening (thanks to my partner's bonus!) and when I got it home there is something shaking on the inside.

I read all the advice (which was great) that you gave others and finally settled on a Canon 400d. I would not mind but I did not get it on the internet incase anything would be wrong.

My question is does something rattle a small bit inside or should I get back to the shop ASAP.

    Thanks all,
    Y.

Have you taken the lens off?
Have you opened the battery bay?
Have you opened the CF Card slot?
If you've done all this & still can't find the source of the rattle, put everything back into the box & take it straight back to the shop.

Finally I can help someone on boards!

On some DSLR there is a very, very faint rattle when you turn the camera from vertical to horizontal (landscape to portrait). Fear not this is, apparently, some kind of advanced techno jiggery pokery at work. Basically a small spring is moving inside telling the camera that its being turned upside down. Im not familiar with your specific brand of camera so it might be worth giving the shop a call to double check but I wouldnt get too stressed out over it between now and then. Just thought you might like to know...

+1 at the orientation sensor :)

in the Nikon D40 there's a metal ball that slides from one position to the other - it tells the camera when you've rotated it horizontally

surprised that most people didn't seem to know about this! Then again the Canon 400D might not have one? But I highly doubt it would have a very expensive gyroscopic system computing the direction (although with the Nikon D3 maybe...)

might save you an embarrassing trip back if they tell you it's just the little ball inside the camera (worse if they think it's a major fault and send it in for repair!)

    Thanks everyone,

Hopefully it is something small like you said, however, I don't know nothing about the inner mechanics of a camera, so think will have to bring it back to the ole shop alright.

    I am soooo disappointed! :(

I will just have to see if they have more stock, it being so close to Christmas. I am off to bring it back to the shops tomorrow!

well before you take it back tomorrow - have a read of the manual - look especially for a paragraph on whether your camera has an orientation sensor or not (it may even tell you that it causes a rattle).

there may also be a faq on the manual or on Canon's website... I'm sure many people have been worried by this *problem* before.

but qualifying the above statement - it is possible that you do have a problem but I'm guessing it's highly likely it's just the little sensor. Better to be safe than sorry I suppose!

Actually, i thought there was something wrong with my canon 350d when i bought it earlier this year, similar story, took it out of the box and was hearing a rattling, i soon sussed that it was the flash "pop up" mechanism and when the flash was up all was grand. I know it has already been said but try popping the flash up and see if the noise persists, if it does take it straight back.

My 350D has a similar rattle, it's the pop-flash. Annoying when you first take out your expensive new toy and it's a rattle, but really you get used to it. I cant remember the last time I even noticed it apart from when I was listening for it. I think it was mentioned in the manual? If you bring it back maybe you'll get one without a rattle, maybe you will get one with the same thing, but that said if you are worried bring it back and ask the shop assistant to confirm it's nothing serious.

While it might have been the case with 350D's I've never heard any rattling on my 400D,

I'd say it's the orientation sensor. It was very noticeable on my 300D initially, and is the same on my 40D (though I've tuned it out, and had to actually check). I think there was a warning in the 300D manual about it, though I don't see a similar one in the 40D manual

To reassure yourself, either find somebody with a 400D, or even a 350D, and see if they behave the same. Alternatively go to the shop, explain the noise and ask to see a demo model to see if it's the same.

I cleaned the sensor on my 400d last night and closed it all p and started freaking out when i heard rattling... then i sourced rattling to pop up flash, when open it rattled. Give it a good giggle

I can hear a faint rattle of something when I tilt the camera backwards and forwards gently? I

The comment about the rattling from the 400d is from the pop up flash hinge. It's actually nothing to worry about but i noticed it the day i bought the camera. Is there anyway to adjust or fix the rattling or just something that I have to put up with?
faint rattle is coming from the small stays in the pop up flash. Seems to be by design.

If you pop the flash up you will be able to see them moving.

Not everybody seems to report it so guess it just depends on the hinge being tighter on some then others?

anything I found on google suggests its ok, I've never noticed with mine...guess I'll have a good listen later :p

As previously said it's more than likely the pop up flash - freaked my out a bit at first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,809 ✭✭✭Stokolan

Yeah I have a rattle in my 400D seems to be coming from around the area of the flash.

I got a 400D the other week and theres also a rattle in it. To be honest I didn't think much of it, since everything was working. I figured it was just something that shook inside.
So em, I'm not too worried about it.

right I've listened carefully to mine, there is a rattle and it is the pop-up flash, nothing to worry about to be honest :)

it stops when the flash is deployed

does in mine got it like that I think it was something in the flash area...

Haven't done any thing about as I got it online and would have to mail it back to hk but it shouldn't rattle these are expensive cameras

I brought the camera back the day after and got a new one. It rattles too, must be just the camera. :o

I take that back. Since reading all the posts here I've checked mine, and there is a small rattle when you shake the 400d with the flash down. Pop it up and the rattle goes away. Never noticed it before. You learn something new every day.
