Misunderstanding the point of Keychain

Am I misunderstanding what Keychain does when using Safari? I thought KC was supposed to autofill passwords etc when you browse to those sites you nominated apps within it that could access that data?

Safari's autofill seems to fulfil that function sometimes and at other times it does not? Does KC have to an open app for it to work?

I know exactly what you mean, i am in the same boat as you. I saw my brother in law yesterday ( he is a windows program developer or something like that, he can work the mac better than i can, and he plans to buy a mac as his next desktop home computer) ---- He said to me a few weeks he would explain the keychain thing to me but i forgot about it yesterday. I will have to wait till xmas eve before i see him again.

I cannot wait to see what the good guys saw here.

Make sure you've checked "usernames and passwords" in Safari > Preferences > Autofill.

Keychain just stores the user-names/passwords, the autofill is your browser's responsibility. The point of Keychain is to consolidate all this info in a single secure place that can be accessed (with your permission) by any app. As apposed to Firefox which ignores OSX's Keychain and uses it's own password manager.

Certain sites somehow don't allow autofill. Internet banking for example uses certificates and won't allow auto login or auto insert of passwords or PINs - at least this is my experience.

I'm not sure why this happens but I'm glad it does - I don't want my bank details stored anywhere but in my head !
