Father in law bought an expensive item on the net at the beginning of the week. He got a phone from "VISA" asking him some stuff and telling him they were going to charge him 14.99 euro for registering his card for use on the net.

Anyone ever heard of this??? Sounds funny to me.

    Pretty sure it's the AIB.

Would the Bank call him or would it be Visa?

    Hi

I also have a CC with AIB for about 6 months and wasn't charge any of that, didn't use it to pay for big amounts.

He should try contacting his bank and if the charge is true move to another CC.

No idea who will be calling could be Visa as a security measure.

    Regards

Well, when I say expensive I mean €520. Expensive enough.
I'll check it out with him tonight as it was my wife that told me about it.
She has been know to get the info mixed up before.

I doubt that this is a charge to use the card online. I've used mine to buy in excess of 1000 euro in a transaction before and have never had anything like this. The only thing he might get in relation to using Visa online is to register for the Verified by Visa programme. This doesn't involve any kind of charge though and is just a secondary security measure that some shops participate in.

Any bank trying to charge you to use your credit card doesn't deserve your business. I hope he didn't give them any details when whoever it was rang him.

That's just what I was thinking.

    Just had confirmation..

According to father in law it was Visa that called him, he gave no details and they told him he was also charged €14.99 registration fee.

We'll know more when he gets his statement.

"It's only €14.99!" Was my wifes reply.
Pretty typical of the whole families reaction probably.

There's a fraud being perpetrated in front of you all and none of you noticed!

Visa woouldn't be ringing. If card with AIB, it's AIB who do the ringing.
Like hallo - I have spent thousands online. There IS NO SUCH THING as registration charge to use on net.

The scammer rang the man, got his credit card details and scammed him for €14.99. Yeah and what about another €14.99 / month recurring charge to use the credit card online!!

Call CC centre straight away and have charge cancelled and send details to Liveline. This is a scam I hadn't heard of before

He said he didn't give any details out over the phone to whoever it was that rang.

Not much of a scam if all they're looking for it €14.99. It'll take them for ever to get up to the level of the former President of Southern Mombobia, whom I believe is now living quite comfortably with his estranged wife.

Visa should not be ringing, but it's not beyond the realm of possibility that they would. He should ring AIB in the mean time to check with them if anything is up. If any transaction has occurred then he can query it and get it reversed.

Ringing Liveline is likely not to get him very far as it appears nothing has actually happened.
