Anyone got any good recommendations? Plan on watching both Gods and Generals and Glory tonight, but wondering what other good ones are out there? Not an area I've really looked into before.

    Thanks. :)

Do they have to be anywhere near good though?

    If not, the Patriot.

Gettysburg was better IMO, certainly worth a watch if you haven't already !

Very good film. Long though, so be warned! On VHS format it splits across two tapes - 5 hours iirc?

B&W classic from old Hollywood's greatest director Michael Curtiz.

Tells the story of the early days of the Civil War.

I agree with others -Gettysburg is a lot better than its prequel, Gods & Generals.
Don't be put off if you found yourself sleeping through G&G.

But for the best telling of the American civil war it has to be Ken Burns' "Civil War" -an unequalled quality documentary.
Normally it cost >$100 on any website I've seen, but recently I found it on Australian websites (such as chaos.com) for around $25AUD -for the full 3-box set. 11 episodes if I remember correctly.
In total it comes to around 18euros including shipping.

And since that's so cheap, you won't want to miss the equally-excellent "The West", follow-up documentary that is a great telling of "how the west was won" in all its cheap, sad, pathetic, heroic glory.
It wasn't directed by Burns', but it's the same style as Civil War, using the same excellent photo/letters/style techniques.
Also a 3 box set. Also going cheap from Australia.

    Both *Highly* recommended!

Thanks lads, some great films there. I am looking more for films based on military events of the Civil War, not so much the Civil War as a background to the film or as a brief interlude to other events (romance, etc)

Gettysburg! I knew there was one named after a large battle but I couldn't remember which one. Strangely, I looked up Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Fredericksburg, and a load of others, couldn't find a thing!

You'd be doing well to watch both Glory and God & Generals in one night but if I had to pick one it would be Glory, great cast, great story, great fight scenes and a great soundtrack.

    The Red Badge of Courage
An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge (a short, but worth it if you can find it)

Depends how much time you have, given 90 minutes I'd pick side 2 of Gettysburg every time. Day 3 -Pickett's charge. If this doesn't get you going, you're not alive.
